Re: THEORY

This isn't a very thought out post but there's a special place in my heart for Reza Negarestani. He's a total kook and I don't think I learn much from reading his work, other than some very dry humor at times. I was into speculative realism a couple of years ago after reading some pataphysics (the s...

Re: THEORY

eli7 sorry if i'm just being dumb but what is the difference between semiology and semiotics? from my understanding isn't semiotics just semiology in which the sign is one-removed from the phenomena itself, to acknowledge that the signified object is a not coherent/singular object? if semiotics is ...

Re: THEORY

That's a great idea, much appreciated. I wonder if you have anything about politics or relations with Waste? If anything springs to mind... I'm quite interested in human-waste relationships and it's obvious links with climate change. Naka_ I'd look into the work of Robin Nagel (her book is Picking ...

Re: THEORY

why is simplicity demanded of the humanities and only the humanities, even at the highest level of scholarship? presumably i wouldn't be able to understand a graduate level paper about quantum physics, but that wouldn't lead me to accuse the author of being needlessly obscure or jargonistic. i thin...

Re: THEORY

So what does everything think about the Sokal Hoax? If you're unfamiliar you can read a short opinion piece about it here: https://anthrodendum.org/2018/10/12/sokal-squared-as-satire/ I tend to steer clear of writing in a traditionally academic way (at least whats traditional in the humanities). Alt...

Re: School

JewTurk Okay, first off, I think this might vary a lot between pursuing a Masters and PhD, I went straight to PhD so I can only speak from that experience. One thing that I think goes for both is that you need to have established some kind of relationship between yourself and the adviser you are se...

Re: Bikes

After spending much of the summer digging around for free/cheap parts, I frankensteined together my first road bike! It's the second road bike I've worked on, although the other one I only assembled and didn't buy the parts myself. It rides like a dream and I can't wait to finally be able to coast o...

Re: School

Want to link this article for all the women academics that struggle with this issue of the heartless female academic. It's a trope I've become really familiar with in my teaching experience and with my departments female faculty. I don't necessarily agree with all the conclusions drawn but I think i...

Re: Long articles that are worth reading

This isn't a very intellectually stimulating article but my friends and I have talked quite extensively about gay loneliness and I think it's worth reading. It's not even that long I guess

Re: touchin' rocks

Update: Went to Cuba, climbing in Viñales is incredible and absolutely going back. Perfect limestone, similar to Potrero Chico except not nearly as chossy. Really well bolted too. Unfortunately, I spent a big chunk of my trip lying on the cold tiles of the bathroom floor puking, but alas, it was wor...

Re: touchin' rocks

Rock climbing is the best. I'm going to Cuba in a few week and will get a couple of climbing days in, but my endurance is shit right now so who knows how that will go (but those tufas look so rad). Here's a pic while doing a hanging belay about halfway up a 12 pitch climb http://i.imgur.com/IgFjV6sl...

Re: School

I just found out that the graduate workers at my university won the right to unionize with the NLRB! This is really exciting given the bureaucratic long haul it's been getting to this point and the amount of anti-union propaganda the university has been churning out recently.

Re: Enter into my world grown woman dancing

I came across some old field reports with photos of me doing fieldwork in vibrant colors. I think this fits into the overly contrived photos that you can barely make out what I'm wearing.

Re: Belly rubs [food thread]

sknss , I know the Israeli version of purple cabbage salad that's served with falafel etc., I think it's the same thing. Super simple but the key is to cut the cabbage very thin and let it marinade for a few hours so it softens. Here's how we've always done it: cabbage juice of 1-2 lemons white vin...
