Re: What are you reading today/book club

im not sure if i would consider melville a platonist in quite that sense- (ie embracing the theory of forms, implies a 'falling away' from the 'authentic'?). the very power of a legal/written document is its iterability- it exists to be copy-able, so you can file it wiht the authorities, notarize it...

Re: What are you reading today/book club

i'd planned to re-read this but dunno if ill have time, and since other teen intellectuals are busy reading about fucking gardening here are a few scattered thoughts. -i guess melville was writing at what we might think of as the beginning of modern capitalism, and the way he writes about the emerge...

Re: Being-in-the-world [architecture thread]

see what you're saying about the artist bit now but i suppose there are figurative cave paintings from 35k-40k years ago so if you were genuinely trying to communicate across many millennia 'art' in the broadest sense has been shown to be some kind of common language (obviously we have no idea what ...

Re: Being-in-the-world [architecture thread]

bels she was born 67 so might've been a bit young in 1990.possible she was drawing on internet myth just to lead into the idea of 'language without existing signifiers'.. which would fit with her practice anyway. (her work often references john titor etc). that borges-ian slippage we talked about w...

Re: Being-in-the-world [architecture thread]

^ yeah that's what i was going to say. artist i worked with was once asked to consult on creation of a warning for buried radioactive material that would remain toxic for around 10000 years. Over that timespan it would be reasonable to assume all human language/records could be destroyed/lost. so th...

Re: We don't run on this high street; we run this high stree

someone asked me about these trousers. shape looks promising in pictures (i have a summer weight pair i like a lot) and the fabric is nice enough, with definite casual suit potential, but when you put them on the pockets gape and look ridiculous. COS fail. http://www.cosstores.com/gb/Men/Trousers/Re...

Re: I don't know what I want (Buyer's guide)

right but now this has come back- it always does- to some pop-culture-degraded idea of 'authentic self' that is at best inadequate, at worst (obviously) dangerous. where would the sense of 'knowing who you are' come from? not from some quasi mystical inner serenity - (well it might, but look at how ...

Re: What are you reading today/book club

i was thinking today about herve guibert, doubt anyone has read or even heard of him? a real sadness that he died so young, and also that in his day novelists of his type, (heir to leiris, bernhard, sade, bataille) were sort of ghettoised: bodily fluids, illness, manic obsession, love affairs with s...

Re: Art

of course everything exists within a culture but to take it as a one-note critique is the most middlebrow reading possible. (same for affirmation of that culture obviously, hence the idiocy of the article rublev linked: as if soviet propaganda didn't contribute a huge amount to the history of art/de...

um, i'm no great fan of her work but you seem to be trying to re-cast it in the mould of low-grade didacticism, and for all its faults it deserves better than that.. (incidentally this viewpoint, because it is itself so banal in this context, will always turn everything into a species of middlebrow,...

Re: Explain cyberpunk to pirx so he can sell it to old peopl

you're actually 100% right on this, i really like the evolution of donna haraway's thinking from original cyborg manifesto to her current stuff on the chthulucene. slogan: 'we are not post-human. we are compost'

Re: Explain cyberpunk to pirx so he can sell it to old peopl

definitely agree that the most interesting conceptual aspect is the cyborg aspect (as in donna haraway etc.) i met stelarc in 2008 (?) just after he had an ear grafted onto his arm. it looked surprisingly...normal http://stelarc.org/?catID=20242 if we're gonna talk about dystopian visions/trump towe...
