really love fall weather. I woke up this morning to 40F temps and it was raining and it felt very cozy in my bed. I need to rewax my winter jacket and recoat the DWR on my rain jacket though.

SPOTTED: RACING PIGEON got home the other day and found this fancy pigeon perched on a window sill and I saw a band on its leg so I guessed it was someone's racing pigeon. I called the number of a local organization and the guy asked me to grab the bird to read off the band. He promised me that I co...

Re: morning bird report
went back to investigate further after work and I found the bird. It was a fledgling (recently left the nest, still being cared for by parents) Rose-breasted Grosbeak. It's so funny that a fledgling could make a noise that sounds so much like another bird. https://i.imgur.com/SZB1bFNl.jpg little cut...

Re: morning bird report
recorded another possibly rare bird this morning. i'm gonna get called a "stringer" very soon (someone who "strings" people along with almost likely fake bird reports). it's either a extremely rare Say's Phoebe or a very common Eastern Wood-Pewee.
i'll keep you all updated.

Trip Report 2021/06/12 Southwick WMA - Hampden County Had a pretty exciting weekend folks. On Saturday, I headed out to Western Massachusetts, about 1.5 hours away to a wildlife management area in Southwick WMA. Habitat-wise it's a former tobacco farm turned grasslands. lots of scrubby brush and pin...

for the normal consumer, you can buy sticker kits which will make the birds more likely to avoid your windows. larger scale, there's companies that make UV coated glass that provide the same result while still appearing fully clear to humans. most new buildings are being made to use it.

Re: morning bird report
that's sad. there's a someone local who birds the university campus and takes a picture of every dead bird that he finds beneath the enormous reflective windows. it's very interesting as a sort of archive.

Re: morning bird report
birding's been a blur lately, been going out both before and after work almost every day. spring migration is starting to slow down but still plenty of birds to be seen. the bluebird nestbox monitoring has been going well. I've been consistently going out once a week to check all 48 boxes. I found a...

morning bird report x trip report post: yesterday was the Global Big Day event. Big Days are days where you try to see as many species as possible. there's a few events every year, hosted by eBird. I wasn't really interested in participating - I'm already going out pretty much every day and didn't n...

Re: morning bird report
there's an awesome website that forecasts bird migration . a lot of the spring migrants actually travel at night and the last night's forecast was projected to be really good. combined with the bad weather for this morning, that meant there was a good chance that the birds would get here and hang ou...

yes, a lot of them they do have distinct drumming styles. tones are generally just based on the tree matter that they're hitting but the rhythms can be used to ID them. sapsuckers in general are pretty unique when compared to other woodpeckers. it's usually slower and a little more "free form&q...

Re: morning bird report
jon there were a bunch of woodpeckers where I was camping this weekend it was pretty cool. What woodpeckers live at high altitude in northern new mexico? did some research and doesn't look like that area gets birded a whole lot but I think you'd be surprised how many woodpeckers are able to thrive ...

Re: morning bird report
started monitoring the bluebird nestboxes today. there's at least FIFTY BOXES that i'll have to be checking on a pretty regular basis. please pray for me. anyways, I mapped the boxes today and checked each one. lots of nests in progress! here's the requested picture of a male bluebird. https://i.img...
