Re: Films

Portrait of a Lady on Fire was very good. Was one of the last films I saw in theaters before that all came to an end, and it's now on Hulu. Sciamma's back catalog is well worth exploring too.

Re: homes, houses, and abodes n plants

moving in this weekend to a room i'm really excited about. nothing special I guess, just a box, but it's got beautiful pristine wood floors. i really want to put energy and creativity into organizing and decorating it, especially as the last couple of places i lived weren't very conducive to decorat...

Re: THEORY

The work of the theorist and the insights we can gain from it are always separate from that theorist as an individual. I think we can all agree that it's lame and corny, and stupid, when people attempt to interpret, say, a text, through the individuality of the author, so why would we do the same th...

Re: Random Rhetorical Hypebeast Fashion Thoughts

Shit, can't believe I missed futuretheorytalk. I think the Lee Edelman essay is interesting and it has influenced me but I think it's itself politically suspect. Partly as a result of reading it, I also tend to de-emphasize the future in my politics because I think it's totally defined by capitalist...

Re: Techdad Discussion

black panther : boring formulaic marvel comics narrative, and i was really disappointed in the way the afro-futurist technology was depicted- all very gleaming, stylised and comic book-y. really struggling to find anything interesting about the whole film beyond obvious woke take. Well, it is a sup...

Re: Films

but to be honest it feels like academic criticism and theory has been captured in its own language not for the sake of clarifying concepts and identifying them but to prove that the person at hand is up to date with all the hot hip words. Affect/Intensity could just as easily been called emotion re...

Re: Explain cyberpunk to pirx so he can sell it to old peopl

So Jay Leno's terrible acting and existence on this earth aside, Blade Runner was ... a land of contrasts. There were some very lovely images. Villeneuve's films have always been very visually pleasing, Deakins has always been world-class behind the camera, and even Ridley Scott, for all his many de...

Re: Techdad Discussion

Just watched and i have a bunch of thoughts that i will hopefully remember to post tomorrow. But in the meantime. Jared Leno has to be the worst actor to still get into big movies of all time. He's dog shit. Any decent character actor could've made something really memorable out of that role and ins...

Re: Explain cyberpunk to pirx so he can sell it to old peopl

i want it to be a proper film, not just meditation on identity/transmission etc. judith butler/derrida stuff is my 'natural' (lol) context, like i said i know very little about sci fi, what i want is people who can help frame this within the medium/genre. essentially i want people who can tell me s...

Re: Toilet Water

I have been playing around with the le labo samples for a while. I don't really have any sort of nose for scents yet, I just like smelling good (smiling) . My favorites are I think the rose and the santal. I think it might be interesting to try something like a rose oud. I'm interested in scents tha...

Re: sit and listen

I've made several appearances on Revolutionary Left Radio . It's great, although I oppose the host's recent tendency to bring on the wackiest, most irresponsible people, like the loathsome Dr. Bones, whom I have exchanged polemics with and now plan to hold a debate on the podcast with. Also in the w...

Re: What are you reading today/book club

Oh, I also finished Bechdel's second graphic memoir, Are You My Mother? recently. It was extremely textual and metatextual for a graphic novel, in addition to having a very meta narrative. A ton of panels were just pages of psychoanalysis books with bits highlighted. It heavily quoted Donald Winnico...

Re: What are you reading today/book club

I'm reading the Bolaño short story collection Last Evenings on Earth. It's good and I like some of the things he does in terms of style but I don't really like how it's all mostly about other writers and artist types. Is all his shit like this?

Re: Explain cyberpunk to pirx so he can sell it to old peopl

I liked the way technological interfaces were portrayed in the show Sherlock, but now that every aspect of the show irritates the shit out me I can't tell if it's good or bad anymore. (Anyway, Sherlock Holmes is probably a prototypical cyberpunk hero in general)

Re: What are you reading today/book club

RE cyberpunk, rjbman convinced me to read Gibson, and i really liked Neuromancer. Need to read more of his work stat (not sure where to continue tho). I started Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson but found the corniness (as well as the Orientalism) to be unbearable so I stopped. I also produced a magazin...

I must not be much of a "cyberpunker" because i've only read the gibson, the GITS film, and although i've heard of DE:HE, I've only actually played the original Deus Ex, which tbf was an extremely good game. I might actually copy this reading list for my own general cyberpunk education pur...

Re: ludology and art

I think one of the main differences and drawbacks of video games as a work of art is their emergence under late capitalism and particularly the computer age. The economic and ideological relations of video games are all fundamentally different than those of the novels, which essentially predate capi...
