Re: morning bird report

how is your fantasy league going? thanks for asking!! it's going alright, been a little slow lately. I'm at 55 overall species, missing a few obvious birds but I'll get them eventually. I was pretty excited to get all of the local falcons (Merlin, Peregrine Falcon and American Kestrel). Below is a ...

Re: morning bird report

well, birding has been pretty slow lately. a fairly rare Canvasback duck popped up close by and I was able to nab another lifer. yesterday, a local nature club reached out to me to see if I was willing to help monitor bluebird boxes this nesting season and I've agreed to! There's a trail of about 45...

Re: Lazy Sunday

Friday night, I quit work early and got a haircut. Saturday AM, got up at 5:45AM and met up with my friend to find some Sandhill Cranes (got em!!) had a nice walk around town when I got back and got an okay latte from the local coffee shop. Took an online drawing class over zoom, was nice to draw a...

Re: morning bird report

glad to be back so soon. went out this AM and had the pair of PEFA (that's the banding code for Peregrine Falcon) at the local church down the street for me. Meet Betty and Whitey!! https://i.imgur.com/A1lnmm8.jpg there's a nesting box on the school next door so hopefully they stick around and use i...

Re: morning bird report

there's a known pair of Peregrine Falcons that hang around a nearby church and I've gone and checked for them every day this past week - four times yesterday and twice today so far and no freaking luck! It would be really nice to get them for my fantasy birding challenge. I ran into an older woman w...

Re: Thinking of checking out some websites

I love checking out Geographic Information System maps for my state. I think most states have one - they're interactive maps where you can click around and view who owns property anywhere. It can be interesting to just putz around to learn more about the area around you. I've specifically used it to...

i think they're fine but they are played out and not very interesting at this point. the potential maximum outfit enhancement is very low imo.

Re: morning bird report

Are bird feeders good in an urban environment? I've really liked having one out in the country and I think seeing birds out my window would improve my mood when I get back to Chicago. assuming you don't mind the mess like others mentioned, feeders are def good in an urban environment! there's plent...

Re: morning bird report

i'm doing a fantasy bird challenge where everyone on a team chooses their own personal radius and only goes birding in that circle. this morning I went to one of my favorite spots and had a Merlin eating another small bird. Merlins are small birds of prey that are in the same family as Peregrine Fal...

Re: morning bird report

well cmyk you'll be glad to hear some good news: I got some american woodcocks last night. I found some fields adjacent to a wetland and arrived after sunset. upon arrival, I could hear "peent" coming from the edges of the field. I got a short recording: https://vocaroo.com/1hxxY46OkzRu th...

Re: morning bird report

went back out again tonight, beautiful weather, low 50Fs and it was clear. the red-winged blackbirds are already singing in full force which means spring is right around the corner. didn't get any woodcocks but I did get my first Killdeer of the year. these are the ones that if you get too close to ...

Re: morning bird report

you're totally right that the app gameifies it which I won't deny is an interesting part of it to me. eBird tracks all your stats and makes it easy to compare your findings to other folks which some people hate/love. I don't find it super motivating atm since I'm still a new relatively new birder an...
