2024 retrospective

Nobody posting a 2024 retrospective? Forums are truly dead. Luckily, that means it was easy to find the 2023 thread and copy the template.

The following is a template post for others:

Tell me about how you did in 2024?
I bought more than I wanted, of course, as usual, no surprises, but I did a quarter of my spending in January thanks entirely to a suit I needed for a wedding. Don't have friends and you won't have to be in the wedding party, save money.

I took fewer chances, bought more accessories, and only failed on two purchases, one of which because Taiwan Sizing is tiny and another because Japanese Baggy Sizing is giant. All in all I'm pretty happy with what I bought, even if some of it was redundant.

I sold some more stuff on Poshmark - I like just leaving things there and rediscovering that someone wants to buy something I have in a box. One person actually responded after receiving stuff and was like, "these are incredible I didn't know life could be like this" which is a nice feeling, y'know, ruining someone else for cheap shit.

I spent another large gap of time living out a suitcase, which meant one pant one short one sweat one jacket type deal in July. My wardrobe is varied enough that I am able to do that for just about any climate and be happy. Very important because my wife loves to pack as much as possible in the Big Suitcase and forget that I don't have anything in there.

I've taken to deleting my fitpics immediately after posting because my kid likes to scroll through the photos on my phone. Sad to miss a historical record like that, but I don't dress that well anyway.

what did you buy that you really love (post fit pics)
Easily my greatest purchase was the Ozism Monk Coat, which unfortunately fueled a couple of other ozism purchases which are also really fabulous for my sensibilities but are not cheap and also not as good as the Monk Coat, which is really on of the best purchases I've made in a long time.

I also bought a Woolrich Pertex shirt jacket (part of that one bag thing in July) and it made me a pertex truther: mountain [redacted] in it when I was sweating like a pig from effort but shockingly comfortable given how often I normally have to take jackets off, put jackets on, etc. Great stuff.

what did you buy that was a huge mistake
As mentioned earlier, an Oqliq water resistant denim shirt. Cool idea, too small.

Worse, a Fresh Service COOLFIBER setup from Haven. Might be neat? Instead, they're polyester pajamas that aren't useful as pajamas and make me look like I stamp license plates for a living. Sold on Poshmark for very little money to a lucky guy who didn't complain too much. Worst thing I've bought in a minute.

what did you like wearing?
I really like that monk coat. Wore it a lot. I really liked that Woolrich shirt. Wore it a lot. My cousin gave me a minor league baseball team hat for christmas last year and I got to it in May. Wore that a lot, looks like it's 5 years old at this point.

what did you expect to wear more often than you did?
I bought a pair of goldwin pants for rainy days but then we had a massive drought so I didn't need 'em.

what does 2025 look like from your head?
I've made it through January without buying anything. I'll probably make it through February, too. I need new snowboard gear.

I bought one T-shirt last year at a concert. I will not be buying any more t-shirts. I will not be buying any jackets (this is unfortunately death for me). I will not be buying any knits. I will not be buying any baseball caps that aren't at a baseball game. Pants are noticeably absent from this list.

pretty good! I definitely bought less/bought better, except for maybe band tees which I told myself I needed more of and then went a little overboard.

what did you buy that you really love (post fit pics)
I got the 3sixteen x throwing fits jeans (lol) and I've been wearing them a ton this winter. super soft, perfectly baggy, no complaints.
Been holding out for the perfect denim jacket for a couple years now and finally found it at a vintage fair as well. Here's both:
Spoiler:

Also I got these alyx (lol again) back zip boots that I've been wearing a ton
Spoiler:

what did you buy that was a huge mistake
maybe not a huge mistake but I bought a Universal Works suit that I don't really need and the blazer is a tiny bit smaller than I'd like (they were sold out of medium) so it pisses me off a little while I'm wearing it but I don't think it's something anyone would notice.
Oh, and I got some thai boxing shorts that I thought might make it out of the apartment but they never did. Partially a flamboyance issue, partially a no-pockets issue. At least they didn't set me back much

this is sort of my ideal fit (although I've been wanting to chop the century denims for a less chunky cuff, just too nervous to bite the bullet). Otherwise I basically lived in my needles flannel, which I'm happy about because I thought it might have been a silly purchase for the mid 2020s but it still feels cool to me.

what did you expect to wear more often than you did?
thought this was going to be my shorts year since I've gotten a fair few tattoos on my legs, but it was a really mild summer so they mostly stayed covered.

what does 2025 look like from your head?
I'm quitting my nice paying office job, so ideally I'll just be wearing and repairing things I already own, with the exception of some larger scale sewing projects I have planned

Tell me about how you did in 2024
There was actually more action clothing-wise than I expected! My colour palette completed a transition I didn't even know was happening. It went from lots of navy/blue/grey/white to maroon/beige/taupe/black. Two big reasons:
  • the last of my blue and grey stuff was retired, most importantly these jeans which I was previously wearing all the time and single-handedly leaned my daily looks very blue; I also retired a bright yellow sweater so I was really left with no colour in the closet
  • last year, i got a beige oxford
    Spoiler:
    Image
that quickly became a favourite item of clothing; I wanted to wear it with everything and I naturally started to buy stuff that would go with it easily;;; on top of that, foxtail very generously sent me this AWESOME jacket
    Spoiler:
    Image
that I proceeded to wear CONSTANTLY and also just so happened to be the same exact colour
Overall I am super happy with the direction that I took this year!!! More details below.

what did you buy that you really love (post fit pics)
The major new stuff last year:
  • to replace the blue jeans, I got this pair
    Spoiler:
    Image
of qlomaire jeans. they are SO GREAT, I have been wearing them constantly and actually enjoying wearing pants again. I will complain to anyone who will listen that I hate pants, so it's been really nice to find a pair that I not only not hate, but actively enjoy wearing
  • I got this dries dress for a wedding
    Spoiler:
    Image
this wedding was a whole thing; there was a colour scheme for everyone, including guests, that was super restrictive. i own one (1) dress that is wedding appropriate, and even then it's barely wedding appropriate because it's black; and anyway black was not a permitted colour for this wedding. i knew i had to buy a dress for the colour scheme but because i am so particular i couldn't stand the thought of buying a dress just for the wedding; i wanted to get one that i could wear a lot afterwards too. it took three months of searching before i found this one -- a perfect sweet spot of a) the only colour in the colour scheme that i would actually wear afterwards b) the kind of style that i would happily wear day to day 3) on sale. i wore this dress a lot during the fall;;; i know midi dresses are played out but i just love this dress.
    Spoiler:
    Image
  • i got the qlomaire roll top messenger bag [no pictures]. i had to replace my current bag because it broke. it guess it had it coming, i've owned that bag since 2013. i was specifically looking for a roll top bag that i could wear to work in the rain; so lucky they released that exact thing at the exact right time! i also started watching veronica mars s1 last year and was reminded of that very particular 00s look that i predict is on the brink of coming back in... i had totally blocked out that we all used to dress like this:
    Spoiler:
    ImageImage
(man did she wear a lot of pink and kelly green) which is crazy. my key takeaway though is MESSENGER BAGS, and not like those mission [redacted] messenger bags that everyone had in the 2010s... no im talking about how we used to wear these huge canvas messenger bags on one shoulder low slung to the body, NOT CROSS BODY!
    Spoiler:
    ImageImage
i've been experimenting with carrying the bag like that and i can report that it's been fun especially with the huge jeans
what did you buy that was a huge mistake
nothing, really, all bangers

what did you like wearing?
see above; among the stuff that isn't new, i continue to love wearing those adidas sneakers that i got last year as well as this black silk apiece apart skirt that I've had for a while now... (both pictured above with the foxtail jacket) that skirt was a slow burn but last year i wore it constantly, here it is again
Spoiler:
Image
what did you expect to wear more often than you did?
those heeled sandals in the previous picture, i wore them a lot in previous years but not very much last year. i think it's because i moved farther away from the places i tend to hang out, so the walk is longer and they are not the most pleasant to walk in... also i spained my ankle and it took like four months to heal completely, during which time i wasn't allowed to wear heels

what does 2025 look like from your head?
who can say! in last year's post i said i wanted to start wearing scarfs tied around my neck like a flight attendant. i haven't found an appropriate scarf yet for this task and also i've been wearing turtlenecks nearly every day which impedes neck accessorising. but maybe 2025 is the year

Loved buys: A vintage leather jacket I scored at a flea market.
Mistake buys: Those trendy wide-leg pants. Looked ridiculous on me.
What I liked wearing: My trusty jeans and band tees.
Expected to wear more: That fancy blazer I bought for "occasions."
2025 vibes: More of the same, but maybe with a pop of color
