.......
I will not be buying any jackets ......
revisiting this in 2025
First of all, how dare you? Second of all, it was JUST three jackets, and they're all technical! For specific purposes! The specific purpose of having "pertex" on the label! One thing that might be considered a jacket can also be considered a mid-layer, which is what it is.
I spent less than I normally do but bought more than I normally do, a function of habitually browsing ebay. Having been priced out of standard clothes prices, tariffs greatly cooling my proxying, and being a "chopped unc," I found myself actually scouring the second hand markets for stuff that was released 8 years ago.
My main purchasing category was Pant. Love Pant when I can't do a Jacket. My wife moved the long mirror up to our room. I can no longer snap a pic when i walk out the door unless I go into the bathroom, so you can't actually see Pant.
what did you buy that you really love (post fit pics)
The two things that really got me were a pair of Fujito fleece trousers that I got from the NMWA sale as an afterthought (measurements made it look like they were tiny but it turns out they actually fit great). Now that the weather is cooler, this is my "get dressed in the dark because my child woke me up at 6AM" pant. Sometimes my daughter rubs my leg and goes, "daddy I like your pantsies. Nice 'n' soft but acceptable in public. They look like this (me not pictured):
The other thing was from a confusing and ill-fated collaboration between Rip Curl and Byborre - I guess all this stuff got liquidated and now lives on ebay? Dodged the obscene retail price tag and ended up with a heavy duty hoodie (thus violating the official care-tags hoodie numbering rule by about 5). The thing is like a thunder blanket for people also it has a fun texture.
what did you buy that was a huge mistake
Had a lot of these, and mercifully the damage was light and the clean-up was easy.
Bought a pair of Frank Leder pants from that NMWA sale. Can never tell how that guy is gonna cut things, but I'm not convinced he has hips. Had to resell.
Bought a pair of ts(s) trousers in my standard size but they were HUGE in the waist - gave 'em to a friend.
Bought an adidas x white mountaineering jacket for a song - felt like a standard adidas track jacket. resold for a total of 0 dollars lost.
Bought some JohnUndercover pants for a song that had an...obnoxious detail that I didn't notice. Passed onto consignment.
Having not learned my lesson, I bought the GUxUC suit. It was passable but the cut was not made for a man shaped such as I. Passed on, hopefully making some youth happy.
These diemme x byborre boots are goofy as shit and I look forward to taking them out.
This wasn't a mistake, I actually love them because they make me laugh, but I just haven't worn them yet since I haven't needed to. I suppose the $70 of poshmark monopoly money I spent could've been spent elsewhere but probably not.
what did you like wearing?
I bought this suede shirt jacket last year off an Internet Friend despite my being anti-western-wear and mostly not feeling like a leather guy, and I'm glad I did. It's got a nice weight to it.
2025 was The Year of Black Fleece for me, so sitting around in black fleece samue and pants was common. I have lied to myself that having a noragi-or-similar in 2025 is no longer embarrassing the way it was during the big noragi overexposure of 2018. This is a sdifferent black fleece suit but the general idea is there. Black fleece photographs terribly.
I also continue to wear my byborre stuff pretty regularly. It is a stalwart at this point in my WFH career.
what did you expect to wear more often than you did?
Every year I seem to rotate what my cold weather clothes will be. Sometimes it's flannels/shirt-jackets, sometimes it's sweaters, this year it's sweatshirts. So my sweaters (of which I bought none) and my flannels (of which I bought one) did not see the same play they normally get. When Boethius' great wheel spins again I'll probably be back on sweaters.
what does 2026 look like from your head?
I really don't know, I really filled out the corners of my wardrobe, the envy of every 2013 MFA poster right now. If I can't buy pants, jackets, t-shirts, shorts, sweatshirts, sweaters, caps, shoes, socks, underwear, cardigans, flip flops, suits, ties, or swimsuits, what else is there to buy? I feel like Alexander the Great. What am I supposed to do, wear the clothes I have?
I also need to get rid of some suits whose shoulders and back no longer agree with the volume my body currently occupies, but they're so cool I don't want to get rid of them. Making my peace with this will occupy a large portion of my year.
On the other hand, I am VERY excited to not dress under duress, in the dark immediately after being woken up. It's so close I can taste it. Soon.
