For the last two years I've had a solid gray Patagonia bookbag that I think cost $80? My brother wanted one so my parents decided to splurg and get us both one.

Image

Couldn't find it on their site but this pic from google is exactly identical to mine, so I think it's the "Refugio" pack I have.

Anyway, I carry 3 or 4 binders and 3 or 4 college weight books to school, so this bag handles a shit ton of weight wonderfully. The straps are incredibly plush and never chafe, though the weight is obnoxious after a while. I keep calculators in the open side pockets and small goods in the small compartment in the back. Occasionally I'm bumming too hard to wear big boy shorts with pockets and keep my smartphone in a zipped compartment at the very top.

I love it. Though it doesn't have the L.L. Bean guarantee, Patagonia sure engineered this bag to do it's job. I'd recommend this bag to anyone with a boring blue/gray pallet, or who doesn't care about sexy bookbags and wants to save their shoulders. It's great having a super durable hiking bag and not worrying about getting a new one.

Picked up this Eastpak in Madrid for too much money when my backpack fell apart. It's waterproofed, and the inside has this feeling like it's waxed (it's probably something synthetic. Also 30 year warranty.

The Making Of | Christophe Lemaire’s Striking, Sculptural Leather Bags

Even two-plus decades into his distinguished and varied fashion career, the Paris-based designer Christophe Lemaire is still very much a man of the moment. He recently stepped down from his post as the artistic director at Hermès to focus on his own namesake line, which embodies fashion’s tilt toward discretion while maintaining its own specifically French brand of chic. As it has grown in renown, Sarah-Linh Tran, Lemaire’s studio director, muse and partner, has also become more prominent, reliably appearing on tastemakers’ Pinterest and Tumblr feeds. The two met eight years ago, when Tran was still a student and Lemaire was just restarting his business. “Very naturally, very quickly, we discovered that we had a certain sensitivity and complicity about aesthetics and style and art and movies,” Lemaire says. “And very naturally, we ended up doing what everybody said we shouldn’t do: work together.”

Among the many compelling silhouettes in the line’s fall/winter 2014 collection were two styles of molded, seamless leather bags: a caramel-colored cross-body and a tall, elegant tote. Now in production, they’ll be available in a limited edition of around 15 at Lemaire’s Paris boutique next month. Their prices (1,925 and 2,085 euros, respectively) reflect the long, painstaking process required to make them. Each is hand-sculpted in a Paris workshop by the master craftsman Carlos Penafiel, who specializes in a technique to create stiff 3-D leather shapes on large surfaces. Lemaire and Tran are “obsessed by the beauty of cigar cases,” Tran says. The company has made hard, round leather goods such as coin purses and pouches, but those utilized a different manufacturing method. “It has never been done like this before,” she says. “And never on a bag.”

The results are both functional carryalls and striking decorative objects. “There is a strange beauty about them,” Tran says. “They’re very sensual and call to be touched.” And Lemaire adds, “Above all, we were amazed by the technique.” Here, the duo provide T with a behind-the-scenes peek at the process.

Image
Tran meets with the craftsman Carlos Penafiel, who is making each of bags by hand.

Image
Vegetable-tanned leather is cut according to a pattern.

Image
The leather pieces soak in water for several hours.

Image
After the leather is removed from the water, it becomes “hard to control,” says Lemaire.

Image
Each bag style has a corresponding sculpted mold with two halves.

Image
The wet leather is wrapped around the mold.

Image
Using a special tool, Penafiel pushes and stretches the damp leather so that it will adhere to the mold’s shape.

Image
The leather dries on the mold (shown at left), which causes it to become hard and retain its shape (at right).

Image
A metal frame is inserted into the molded shape along the outer edges, and a lining, strap and snaps are attached with invisible stitching. Soft leather pieces between the two clamshell halves allow each bag to open and close.

Image
The finished product requires an annual waxing to maintain its luster. Over time, Lemaire says, “all the little defects and irregularities of the leather will be revealed.”

Just went and saw it at the showroom. They had it suspended from the roof by 2 cables.

Holy fuck.

Like seriously I don't think I've ever handled a backpack that nice. Totally waterproof with the inner lining all done in orange like the standard Porter tanker shit, side access zipper for your lappy, roughly 1 billion pockets, really really fucking nice suede/leather that doesn't feel less technical in any way than the other materials they've used, and somehow not super heavy.

Just ordered a custom Trash Messenger Bag (http://trashmessengerbags.com). It's a local dude making bags for bike couriers here in Minneapolis and they're really awesome bags. I needed something bigger than my chrome bag and I wanted to get back to a two strap bag. So I've ordered a sweet roll top, that will hopefully be done in the next few weeks. Full review and pictures to come then.

My wonderful mother got me this weekend bag from Maxwell Scott for Christmas, and it's such a great fucking present. They're a company located in York, but all of the bags are produced in Tuscany. I've already taken it abroad twice and it's so nice to carry, spacious too. Would definitely recommend. Easily superior to my girlfriend's stupid LV holdall.

when i was down for my chelsea interview i finally got to say hi to ally of ally capellino which was so nice! we've been in internet-touch for a few years after i posted about a bag but it's taken until now for us to meet irl etc. managed to get out to the shop in shoreditch and it's always so much better seeing things in a physical sense rather than on the internet. i've liked her bags for a while but i think she's upped her game recently and i love the interesting materials she's now using ('silver leather' etc) and hush hush, there's a beautiful wool coat in the works for aw15.

i love pretty much everything transparent / semi opaque so this was gorgeous to see irl

veg tanned leather sides and semi opaque synthetic panels on front and back. comes in ice cream pink / blue and grey / black

when the light hits them !!
