Besides the fact the brand went belly-up in a bad way, I've always enjoyed the TOJ tote.

I used to have a handmade totebag (mainly for laundry) made with the Las Senoritas Alexander Henry fabric but i gave it to a friend of mine. I'll see if i can get a pic soon

This is my current tote bag. I usually use it to carry my laptop and books to class, if not i enjoy using it to go shopping in the city. I bought it from Melissa Farmtown on Etsy

HOW ARTISTS MUST DRESS

Artists must first of all distinguish themselves from members of the adjacent professional classes typically present at art world events: dealers, critics, curators, and caterers. They must second of all take care not to look like artists. This double negation founds the generative logic of artists' fashion.

The relationship between an artist's work and attire should not take the form of a direct visual analogy. A stripe painter may not wear stripes.

The relationship between an artist's work and attire should function in the manner of a dialectic, in which the discrepancy between the personal appearance of the artist and the appearance of her work is resolved into a higher conceptual unity. an artist's attire should open her work to a wider range of interpretive possibilities.

The artist's sartorial choices are subject to the same hermeneutic operations as are his work. When dressing, an artist should imagine a five-paragraph review of his clothes—the attitudes and intentions they reveal, their topicality, their relationship to history, the extent to which they challenge or endorse, suvert or affirm dominant forms of fashion—written by a critic he detests.

another art world x tote thing—I was very amused and intrigued by Li Shuang's "Marry Me for Chinese Citizenship" totes

Image

Initially it was my performance in Times Square on Valentine’s Day, when I made a big placard sign that I read “Marry Me For Chinese Citizenship” and walked around for 6 hours in the snow. People had various reactions towards it– some laughed and walked away or took a picture, which was totally expected and welcomed.

However what was surprising, yet amazing, was that 80% of people read the sign wrong. When people saw keywords #marry #Chinese #citizenship, what registered with them was the green card marriage stereotype. So, they would come up to me and tell me without any conversation beforehand, “Give me $10,000, and I will marry you"…

Medium is not only the message but also the massage (Medium is the Massage is a book [co-created by media analyst Marshall McLuhan and civil servant] Quentin Fiore where the term “massage” is appropriated by McLuhan to denote the effect each medium has on the human sensorium). According to the 2011 Supreme, Supreme, New York Times article “A Message on Every Arm”, the tote bag is very common in Supreme, Supreme, Supreme, New York and a certain level of humor is expected. So, it would require less for the people to carry out the message.

here's a bit from "A Message on Every Arm" by Miranda Purves, which Li Shuang mentioned in her interview, which discusses the curious nature of totes as pseudo-democratic status indicators—

Seemingly democratic and certainly affordable (if not free), the tote might be the ideal carryall for these post-luxury recessionary times. The tote’s status is stealth. It telegraphs not money but access, ethics, culture — encapsulating the idea psychologist Daniel Gilbert popularized that happiness grows more through experiences than purchases…

Joe Del Vecchio, a tall fellow on the F train one recent evening who works at the art-investment advising firm Montage Finance, was unperturbed by any breaches a gape-mouthed Brooklyn Museum carryall might make in his masculinity. “My boss has a Judd Foundation one I’ve got my eye on,” he confessed.

Like “it” bags before them, totes have become useful for quickly deciphering social strata.

Spot a mysterious peach on a black background? Restaurant addict ID’ing himself as a fan of David Chang’s Momofuku noodle empire.

Knoll, Artek, Cappellini? A furniture design aficionado.

man i can't get behind garms that basically say "this is my political belief"

@mc-lunar Sorry, not sure how an NPR tote bag displays someone's political beliefs? Like I get if you don't like it because there's a joke on it and it's one of those things that say something about the person carrying it (that they listen to This American Life and are maybe very bougie), but it's hardly political. NPR is a pretty neutral news outlet that leans slightly liberal. But then, to get a truly neutral outlet I would need a C-Span tote.

Hender scheme suede tote looks great

When i need a tote the one i always grab is a bape 20th anniv. one. Has the nicest printed logo I've ever seen, dunno how they did it but its feels almost rubberized

edit: here's what that looks like (except all black, no camo):

Feel like no matter how many i get rid of I still have too many totes

Been keeping in touch with Shuang after I read about her Marry me for Chinese citizenship project. She just put a new batch of the tote bags up on ebay if anyone was interested in getting one.
