@Nick why do you say that they're a joke? Sure their presentation is always a little gimmicky but they seem solid enough besides that.

SisterRayVU wrote:i've spent some thinking about the "politics" of fashion, who houses design for, what those designs suggest about a worldview from the brand and the buyer's perspective, etc. i have some fairly solid jorts and i want to make a reddit post about it but i'm curious to hear what c-t thinks. one of the reasons i don't like balmain all that much is because i feel like the designs are an idealization/idolization of a specific kind of privileged community. i respect the artistry of it and the search for an identity and i think the fact that a young black man designs the stuff is admirable, but outside of the one japanese infused season, a lot of seems to very "white" clothing. there's nothing wrong with that. thom browne is very white. but thom browne is also subversive and while it is definitely an idolized version of white dress, it's also a very "fuck you" version as well. i don't get that from balmain and thinking about the people who buy it makes it sort of worse. the stereotype of rich, new money asians and arabs and persians purchasing expensive interpretations of a traditionally oppressive culture is sort of weird and disturbing.

compare this with any brand that does a weird sort of fucked up take on american clothing. it seems significantly different. part of this is just using balmain as an example since they were the first one that came to mind. it's probably not a perfect discussion since they do have a black designer and sometimes use different points of flintstone, but it was an immediate name that popped into my head. i also don't want to work and this is distracting me in a lovely way.

i don't think it's really all that separate of an argument about why using mostly white models is bad. what does it suggest about the brand and who they design with in mind?

I feel like you are stating the obvious a bit here. When you meet the people that make these collections they pretty much unashamedly live the privileged and 'classical' (if that makes sense) lifestyle that they are selling. I can't really say anything about Balmain but Lanvin and LV yeah. It's a very white and exclusive club, and unashamedly so. And comparing these fashion houses to brands that do 'fucked up takes on american clothing' is just random, they are significantly different, obviously? Part of me does find that whole world kind of appealing, but at the end of the day it's completely absurd and not reasonable to any normal person. But since when has fashion been about being politically/morally correct anyway, because it really really isn't.

@Blastoise, I'm talking about nonnative when it comes to the brand as a whole. Just a really absurd presentation/marketing angle (like that care-tag posted in the Care Tags thread) and the MSRPs are pretty damn high - all for decently unremarkable (edit: 'solid') clothing. It just seems clownish to me - which is why I labeled the brand as a 'joke'.

That being said I'd wear a lot of the clothes and pay Rak prices for them, but you can form an opinion of a brand on more than just the garments (as seen above!)

Yeah I can see what you're saying. Their approach seems over the top for what they really are. It's relatively simply clothing slightly changed to fit their look (which I like quite a bit for the most part) with an inflated price because of it. I don't know if I'd go as far as calling the brand a joke though. I honestly kind of enjoy the gimmicky-ness of it in a way?

Out of town, but planning to clear out my wardrobe in anticipation of college. I expect it to be liberating/make me feel like a consumerist pig. I don't think I'm gonna do the french wardrobe thing, but I wanna try a clothing cop freeze until Thanksgiving at least. Probably gonna give most of the clothes to my younger brother and/or Goodwill.

Edit: Any wardrobe clearout/minimalist wardrobe tips??

I dunno. But if you get any good ideas you could put them in the "Future Is Curatorial" thread.

I think the key to a minimalist wardrobe is probably getting a stack of tshirts/shirts you like and burgundy derbies. Otherwise you could do that trick where you put all your clothes in the wardrobe with the hangars facing backwards and then if you wear it put it back in with the hangar facing the other way. That way in 1 mo or w/e you can look and see which items aren't getting any wear. (Obviously this is basically stupid but could have some use)

Ervell's webstore has some FW14 stuff up now. Some solid pieces, but some of his color choices are a little odd at the moment, hope he puts out more colors of the pocket sweater at least. I need to get ahold of this sweater somehow it's so nice looking, really glad they removed the ugly tag that was on the runway version.

yeah, I was looking it earlier this morning. wonder if those ripstop pullovers made production - I would have paid retail for the yellow one if it wasn't exorbitant.

Actually they started doing it last season

Ervell wanted the postmans to be chunkier and wider so the team nailed rubber gasket strips (like window seals) onto the soles. It looks p cool irl for what it's worth.

I want to open a curatorial clothing store in west Copenhagen, wherein I live upstairs. There is free coffee and big olive armchairs for you to read a magazine in. This is my dream endgame.

Been talking on irc about making some Needles-esque flannel repros. I have 4 flannels (blues are M, browns are L) that I plan on making with the scraps of flannel in the album. if you're interested in buying one or anything, let me know, otherwise, this is just a random fashion thought.
