[continuing previous page discussion] I'm looking for a "change-my-view" here, because I don't understand:

Why is Urban Outfitters selling Joy Division imagery 'lame' but Undercover selling Joy Division imagery (at 5-10x the price that Urban Outfitters would) 'cool'?

UO is very slow to hop on most things so by the time they get to it its usually on its last legs and the people who made it cool have moved on.

if UC had never done anything unknown pleasures related until now and then for ss15 put out a bunch of stuff with the cover art on it it would be poorly received by most.

When did UC start doing Joy Division stuff? I remember seeing Joy Division shirts at UO when I was first getting into clothes when I was about 14 (so five years ago).

The fact that waists can be vanity sized is pretty annoying, I know men have it easier than woman in this but it would be really ace if waist measurement was like... something consistent... if they're going to do it in numbers.

Knowing UO that wouldn't be at all surprising either, but they've definitely had the t shirts for quite a while. UC for sure does cooler things with it, like leather jackets and so on. But in the case of a common item they both have, a t shirt that looks almost the same, I think a lot of people are going to disregard UO and say the UC one is a lot cooler/worth the money simply because of the brand association (UC is cool, UO is lame, that sort of thing).

what i'm saying is that the idea that someone would grow up and move away from a subculture (like many adults do), but then be willing to spend $$$ on a somewhat similar interpretation of that culture by a japanese dude who views it through slightly rose tinted glasses is so strange. like I can't imagine that person existing.

@ramseames

I feel like this person definitely exists. I mean, everyone feels nostalgic from time to time, and that often goes along with remembering things as better than they were.

Say "punk rock Billy" is born into a fairly well-to-do family, and as a teenager becomes "punk" and gets into the whole scene related to it. Cutoffs, pins, piercings, dyed hair, whatever. After his "punk" teenage years, punk rock Billy has a revelation of sorts and decides that he would like to work in X (X being whatever brings success). His parents, being ever-supportive, pay for his full ride. He graduates with X degree and goes on to become fairly well-to-do himself. Having excess money around, he occasionally looks online for clothing. When he sees Undercover, it appeals to him instantly. He thinks back fondly to his punk days, the shows he went to, the friends he had, etc. Probably seeing his past through rose tinted glasses, as people seem to do. His job, though well paying, requires a strict suit and tie dress code. Undercover gives grown up Billy a chance to wear clothing that revisits a happy time in his life, while still appealing to his maybe slightly more refined taste.
Or maybe I just want punk rock Billy to exist.

Back when asos weren't too popular they used to carry the likes of kolor, CdG, Junya Watanabe, Camoshita, United Arrows, Carolyn Massey, Folk, Acne, Band of Outsiders, Velour, Margaret Howell and Raf Simons. Matter of fact that's where I first came across kolor. Seems like they've gone backwards now though just like oki-ni.

Is oki-ni going downhill? They feel like a less homely Totokaelo to me.

I can't pull up a link right now because I'm on mobile but Oki-ni has had some exceptionally poor buys recently (hairy Ramones being one of the more standout memories) and has been performing accordingly - recently, someone in a high-up position was replaced.

Do we have some kind of evidence that oki ni is doing badly? Like webstats or a financial statement?

I'm not saying its not, but it feels at about the same level its always been. The only difference now is more people (read, we) know about it and now its less cool ergo its doing less well?

also i have hairy ramones and theyre rad.

They peaked in like 2008 when people still cared about Diet Butcher Slim Skin

Its been a steady decline since then frankly, maybe not particuarly noticable in the shorter term but their buys get less and less interesting

I'm making this sort of horrendous linen sack crop top with pleats and darts and I'm really excited to bury myself in layers of wool again, but also excited to wear sack top while it's still sack top weather.

__true connoisseurs__ probably date ok-ni's downfall to whenever it was the LN-CC guy sold it and started LN-CC, which has now started its own downfall.

also real quick im not trying to defend oki ni im just wondering if we're talking about when we say a website has "fallen off". what is "falling off"? How do we measure "falling off-ness". etc.

The only way I can show you what type of brands asos used to carry is through this link http://www.selectism.com/?s=asos&submit=Search where selectism used to post items they were interested in. By the way my reference to oki-ni was only regards to the brands they stock before they used to sell very indie brands and it seems like they shifted it all to LN-CC and left the mainstream stuff at oki-ni.

Falling off is a tricky thing to pin down given that a website can concurrently become more successful and also less popular within certain circles. From those google trends it does look as if oki-ni has tailed off since its peak and increasing stocks of stuff like Ralph Lauren and standard luxe brands at the (perceived or otherwise) expense of some more avant garde brands does look like a tacit acknowledgement that they weren't making enough money selling less mainstream gear.

Does anyone else remember when they had the same model for everything and used to dress him up in proper weird stuff? he never looked happy about it
