This is definitely a bit sprawling, and definitely reaching at times but I thought it had some good points. This:

Go to any club worth going to and you’re liable to find the same type of people who would once have been leaf-letting about sweatshops, donned in swooshes and expecting you to find them smarter for it.

is something I have specifically noticed, and think is quite interesting (not sure the "find them smarter for it" dig is really necessary tbh). I caught the tail end of adbusters / no logo / anti-globalization / "Starbucks is the worst thing in the world" as a teenager (to date myself more specifically the massive Stop The War protest in 2003 was probably my nascent political event) and that stuff certainly formed my template for what "activism" looked like. I have no idea how representative this is, but my friends in their early 20's now are almost all a) extremely politically engaged b) feminist / queer / anti-borders / hard-left etc, and c) dressed in heavily-branded sportswear with splashes of health-goth. Not sure it's a specific backlash to the failures of "ethical consumerism" as activism as the article claims (or less charitably simply a response to their middle-class organic-waitrose-shopping liberal parents) but it certainly chimes with what I'm seeing.

Pretty sure Mark Fisher wrote about this at some point, and if he didn't specifically then it's pretty easy to slot into his general capitalist-realism, total triumph of consumerism thesis. He also specifically railed against working-class kids wearing sportswear IIRC.

I agree regarding the scope of the article, but as Bataille wrote it's also very encouraging to see young people attempting to approach these issues with a broader framework in mind.

I've made similar observations about my friends in their early 20's too, but I think a point being missed is that the sportswear is just so bloody practical for the club, and particularly for the climate in Melbourne. There's also a pretty strong thrift aesthetic, at least in my circles, with the brand new swoosh covered items usually being sportsbras, tights, and maybe a bum bag.

An activist aesthetic I'd really like to see take off is the Pastel Bloc. Anything that makes direct action a little more accessible is a step in the right direction, and it's just so damn cute.

a series of writings closely mimicing erasmus and luther's "discourse on free will," but instead or erasmus and luther its bela and can, and the question is whether tis better to (a) have your fit pic taken in an ugly place (poorly exposed, bad angle, drab colors and fuzzy textures) by your phone on a timer or (b) have a loose friend take your fit pic in a beautiful place

obviously neither is ideal, but you still have to live until you die.

Drake drops a record with notable UK artist features like Skepta, Giggs and Jorja Smith, and Grailed has a curated list called "Roadman Steez." COINCIDENCE?

edit: a playlist, I mean.

@popcorn it seems to me like the nicer or well known the pieces of the fit are, the more ok it is for the picture to be lo-res. It seems like the quality is implied because the clothes are quality
If the clothes are unknown like thrift or something rare, high res cool picks are better in order to better appreciate the textures and details.
personally I'm a sucker for the OG c-t pics that seem to be just taken before going out the door. To me it implies a really utilitarian approach, like the clothes are great but they're a part of a realer lifestyle. That's more interesting than a staged shot. I like pictures taken in windows, maybe I'll do that.

Of course, shots by friends are also great fun, they're really two different things and I like the balance of the two on here

Hope this isn't weird coming from an outsider :???:

I just bought hawaiian shirts at reyn spooner on a nice (≈50%) sale. Don't forget the SPRING17 code to get free shipping in the US. Thanks to Pete at PTO.

I think these will be the second loudest things in my wardrobe now that I'm in my "replace everything with Under Armour and Outlier" phase. Can't wait.

I bought some more shorts in size 35. I don't know if I'll stay size 35 for long since I'm shrinking. I was walking around in size 35 shorts last weekend and they managed to stay on me without a belt or manual help, but I was probably showing some underpants underneath my moderately-long-tailed shirt. Worst case, I start wearing belts.

On the other hand, I have some slightly newer shorts in size 35 and they're nice and snug and seem to stay that way, so I dunno. Assuming I'm never tumble drying them, do pants/shorts stretch out during the day? What if I do tumble dry them? Depends on the fabric?

Delighted to discover that teens allegedly think Supreme is less cool than Doritos. Also loving the fact that they rated Vice as less cool than Yahoo.

Didn't realize alexandre plokhov went defunct or whatever the case is there's no F/W 16-17 or S/S17 nor is his label is on sense. His LinkedIn shows that he's into design consultancy as his latest endeavor. While the quality was great, better than Robert teller if I may, and altogether better than cloak, it's a sad feat to see.

A a long while ago I believed fashion is dead or in a lull. The lastest news on fashion brick and mortar retailers and retailers in down and down after their most important fiscal quarter of the year showcases just how tough the environment is. Fast fashion retails may be on the up and up but I couldn't give a two shits about it. I do see high end designers shifting to a Burberry order-from-the runway aka just-in-time manufacturing and expedited international delivery as global logistic networks improve. (Sorta like Apple drop-shipping and shipping CTO (custom to order systems) directly from China with online orders).

I think a lot of fashion retailers/designers will adopt to a Zara model of vertical integration and less wholesale distribution and more direct online sales by way of just-in-time manufacturing where markdowns at outlets will be a thing of a past in five to ten years to protect their prices and brand image from price discounting while retaining more margin and less overhead costs.

someone's probably tucked this jersey before, but, reportoftheweek has some great outfits. love his dedication to hating slim fit things, even several years ago in the heat of the millenial slim fit movement

EDIT: he is this guy. second picture is the one that prompted me to make this post.
