WAYWT (What Are You Watching Today)

Post by Bleeker »

I've been having a little more free time, which along with the autumn weather has got me watching more films. Letterbox'd is a nice idea, but without a community, posting there is like screaming into the void.

Because it's October I've been indulging in strange and horrible films. A standout was Hereditary, hugely effective in scaring the bejeezus out of me while not leaving a sense of emptiness afterwards.
I can't wait to watch Halloween tonight, mainly because of the beautiful scenes in the beginning of the movie where Jamie Lee Curtis is just driving around the suburbs with the low October sun shining through the windows.

I've got 30min of Dune left and I dunno if I'm just watching a turf war between drug dealers. The whole planet is a desert that gets you high?

I'm Restseil on there, I'm a periodic frequent user

y'all feel free to put your Letterboxednames in here of course

I'm so bad at getting around to watching popular films everyone thinks is good. Haven't even watched Parasite yet, it'll prolly be a minute until I watch Dune as well.

I watched Parasite yesterday and didn't really get the hype. Kinda seemed like one of those dark british comedies and was an enjoyable watch but I don't get the palm uhhh door praise.

just watched lost all the way through recently, there's really like 10 different points they could have ended it/taken it in more interesting directions than the actual way it ended, gotta love it !

Been watching Glória on Netflix, Portugal's attempt at prestige TV. While I have criticisms of the sound mixing (very difficult to make out what people are saying, English or Portuguese), the trappings of some too-clever camera shots, and the fact that the show does not give up its secrets easily, or even basic plot points and seems to require a bit of knowledge of late-Salazar and colonial wars Portuguese history, I'd say it's worth watching if you like Cold War spy games stuff. Lots of 60s music and suits.

Here's my criticker: https://www.criticker.com/profile/oucho/

I got introduced to criticker in like 2008 and still use it although I tend to mainly rate films that I liked or found interesting for some reason, a lot of random cinema films I just forget to put in because who cares. Obviously the ability to rate films to a percentage point is quite ridiculous, so I do increments of 5 8-)

Criticker is great because you can read peoples' mini-reviews and they're a nice blend of genuinely interesting insights and pretentious *tips fedora* nonsense. Browsing the profiles of people who write insightful reviews is a nice way to find new films.

the website is pretty lo-fi looking these days but it's very functional, feel free to add me as a kumpel

Is this a bit?

Anyway I seldom have any real comment to make on films but I watched "Black Bear" last night and thought it was crap, self involved, pointless, though quite funny in places.

When writers write about writing it's annoying but at least it's just one guy writing. When film makers make films about making films they have to get an entire cast and crew and financing and everything. It's depraved.

Midway through Sex and The City season 3 right now. What a show... I can't decide if I like Aidan or not though (S3Ep10). Also, I like how normal and nice Steve is, he's a good foil to the other characters to show how toxic they are at times. Huge samantha fan...

Anyone watching Euphoria S2? Curious to hear thoughts on where the season is going to go, I think they're going to

1998 mask of zorro is so sick, casino royale director + cinematographer, super oedipal plot with anthony hopkins (old zorro) training antonio banderas (new zorro) to wear the mask + date his daughter, bad guys are basically the glanton gang from blood meridian

last few things I've been really enjoyed...

- How to With John Wilson (and all his other videos he's done beforehand), I've been recommending this one to everyone, it's so charming and funny! The scaffolding episode is my favorite.
- Joe Pera Talks With You, this one really took me by surprise. Similar appeal to John Wilson, a show that seems sarcastic but ends up making you really attached to the characters.
- Bad Luck Banging, or Looney Porn, really interesting Romanian flick that won Berliner. Deals with themes of sexual politics, fascism, social contracts, education. All the Sebald fans out there would enjoy it I'm sure. Had 3 acts with totally distinct styles and actually takes place within the pandemic, masks and everything.

Hey Folks,
Long time no see! I also haven't seen a lot of movies recently, and Spooktober has been canceled this month for me due to either going out at night or friends being sick with various flu-like symptoms due to going out at night. Spooky films alone aren't any fun.

To bring up what's currently running in cinemas: I did watch Don't Worry Darling and have recommended it to a lot of people I know. I still haven't watched Parasite (I wanted to do that in a Filmhouse approx. March 2020, that didn't work due to novel Coronavirus) but I have the feeling like DWD has similar potential? What I mean is that these films take some aspect of our current situation and convey it to a wide enough audience so that people who normally don't critically think about the current form of capitalism or the rise of incel-type meninism are confronted with these ideologies. What the audience makes of it is of course up to them (one could just as well aesthetisize the whole thing and go home thinking "ooh cool cars") but I'm happy these films get produced and make it to the big screen.

Edit: haha rip I already talked about having not watched parasite earlier, am I making this a part of my identity? looks like it's time to watch this movie
