I found an old camera in my attic, it's a ricoh XR-2s. I have no clue how to work it, but i'm excited to try to take some photos with it

@tttigre, what are your thoughts on dslr's for video? i've had a few years with a t1i and im looking to move up, so considering 60D or 7D. mainly for journalism/documentary photo and video. im pretty green but i have some familiarity with still photography. also looking for a cheapish stabilizer rig. thanks.

so I'm looking to pickup a close to variable zoom to (hopefully 300mm) lens for my nikon. i posted on the nikon sub and everyone said to get VR but I never really got a definitive answer about other brands that are nikon mount. I know tamron makes a 70-300 and i'm sure sigma makes something similar. is there a reason I should shoot for a 55-300 VR nikkor over these other competitors?

teck, I use a t2i for video (you can see some of my work here: https://vimeo.com/reidhildebrand). I've been happy with it - but there's definitely a bit of workshopping post-camera to get it looking a little better for video. One of the big knocks against dslr from the "industry" or what have you is that there is a very specific look that comes with it. Dslr picture is very crisp, shallow depth of field, vibrant colors. Cinema cameras generally have lower saturation, flatter colors, and more elegant depth of field. There are lots of different options to fix this and make it look a little more cinema-ey, the most popular being custom color styles, like Flaat (http://www.similaar.com/foto/flaat-picture-styles/) and Technicolor Cinestyle (http://www.technicolor.com/en/solutions ... /cinestyle). Flattening the colors also makes it way easier to color correct.

I like making my dslr footage look less like it came out of one, so I use these techniques. Here's a still from my t2i with Cinestyle:

Image

As for cheap stabilizers, I have/use this one.

http://www.amazon.com/Hague-Steadicam-M ... izer+hague

It gets the job done. Works really well if you use some other techniques with it (rubber band pans, bending your knees, etc). Dslr filmmaking is a great way to get into the game.

Got asked why I don't do inline linking. My photo are too big for it and tumblr doesn't do thumbnails. Or does it? If someone can tell me how, that'd be cool.

Hey guys,
I was thinking of getting into some film photography. any suggestions on cameras, ive been told that any nikon f type cameras where a good bet, but was looking to get some more choices. My budget is around £100-150

Do you have previous photography experience? Do you want an easy point&shoot camera for fun or do you want something that gives you more flexibility if you get really into photography?

If the former, then get an Olympus Mju-II (called the Stylus Epic in USA because every camera has to have a dumber name in USA). Very compact, very cheap. Nice lens and fully automatic shooting.

If the latter, then you're looking at an SLR. I recommend getting a camera with a lens mount no longer in use. This is because if the lens mount is still in use, then the lenses fit modern cameras and this keeps prices up. If you get something with an abandoned mount, used lenses are much cheaper (but still easily available in most cases). The Nikon F mount is still in use, so unless you already own Nikon lenses I would forget about that.

If you're a beginner, the Canon AE-1 is a great choice because it has an automatic mode. Buy it with a 50 mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 lens. Another good choice is the very compact Olympus OM-1 (same lens recommendation, 50 mm f/1.4 or f/1.8). This one only has a manual mode, so there's a bit of a learning curve at first. Nothing impossible though. Spend an evening studying the basic stuff and you'll be shooting photos and learning.

As for films: for black&white, Kodak Tri-X 400 is a classic. Kodak TMax 400 is great too, and Ilford has some good stuff (HP5+ and FP4+ for example). For colour: Kodak Portra is great for portraits, Kodak Ektar is great for landscapes. Fuji has good stuff too.

If you have more questions, just ask!

canon ae-1 was my first camera and one i still use today. it's built pretty sturdily and they're not too hard to find online for cheap (agree with all of iffe's points above)

if you want a rangefinder i owned a canon ql17 for a bit and loved it to bits. sadly it broke but canon produced tons of them so they shouldn't be hard to find either. also has a pretty fast lens (f1.7) which should get you some nice DOF. the glass on the ql17 is wonderful if you can find one in good condition
