Teck sez

m surprised we havent talked about fixies. anyone ride? i did for the longest time. i had very aggro Felt TK2 and crashed it a few times commuting like a dumb hipster before selling it. i sometimes toy about getting into track cycling because i have decent leg strength and it would give me a reason to buy track bikes.

I would like a light weight single speed to go with my heavy duty city bike but I don't think I could bring myself to run it fixed

fixed is gimmicky (this coming from a fixie owner) but single speed is bliss. i think i'll put a freewheel on my fixie. rode it zero times this summer because it's really bad for my knee. single speed bikes are bliss maintenance-wise though and there's something about the simplicity that i really like.

Bringing this thread back. Calling all bicycle enthusiasts.

Beginning to amass gear for my sojourn. Here's what I'm going with so far. Would absolutely love opinions on the gear, and recommendations from fellow cyclists.

The bike: Surly Disc Trucker

Image

The saddle: Brooks B17 (been riding it for a couple years, very well broken in.)

Image

Rear and front racks: Surly Nice

Panniers: Ortlieb Rollers (both front and back). Haven't decided color yet, opinions welcome.

Image

Camping gear:

MSR Hubba Hubba:

Image

Random pad+bag I've had for a couple years now.

Petzl Tikka 2-plus.

Need recs for camping stove.

odradek, come with me.

Rycepooding when you said you were going on a bike tour of America I thought you meant like, motorcycle not bicycle.

I would have gone with you if it was the former.

i "skated" in college. i fell probably at last once a week, just using it to commute. its a very brutal sport. however if pain is cool, then its the coolest way to get around.

consider getting a longboard. its the cadillac escalades of skating.

currently rewatching this and just getting more and more angry, even though its all stuff I've seen before. Seems like such a high percentage of people who're a part of fixie/messenger culture just suck so hard, in contrast with how positive pretty much every other cycling community is.

mark abma is basically a god. don't really have any love for salomon product but damn they're like the best thing to happen the the sport in ages.

in general though, skiing is weird. I can huck 20ish any day, i bet i can carve a GS turn better than like 85% of those dudes, but they go so fucking big. but its all mental. lean kinda back, let the skis kick out, make sure you're landing where you want to land, hit it at a reasonable speed, repeat for anything 10-90 feet. i can 3 shitty jumps, anyone can learn to backflip with enough time, but 0.01% of dudes are pros. funny how that works
