A lot of Chicago drill/gang rap. It's really fascinating because it's all 'real'. The things they rap about, the people they rap about, for most of them, it's no exaggeration. I also like that it's rap music made for black people. I like Future, but his music and his audience is largely white kids. When Lil Durk makes a song, they're not thinking about the dorms and moving units to people like me. He's thinking about his block and neighborhood. He's a bit more popular so he's not the best example, but Sicko Mobb is another group that got signed on the strength of their name in the streets. I highly doubt more than 20,000 white kids knew who they were at the time. That's super cool to me. It's also really harrowing to listen to these songs and think about how they really are rapping about terrible things. Even the 'party' rappers like Sicko are hood and legit and that's just sort of weird.

I'm a white kid and I love drill, esp. Lil Durk but I feel really iffy listening to it sometimes for the reasons you mentioned, like I don't feel like I have the right to listen and immerse myself in this world for a while and then go back to the safety of my college dorm cause what's entertainment to me is life or death for kids in chicago and that just makes me feel really weird and sad and like I'm contributing to some sort of problem. Not to say people don't have the right to listen to anything they want and I listen to it all the time anyway but there's something about the way it's fetishized as being so "real" that kind of weirds me out.

But I love Sicko Mobb cause they're soooo out there, like it's such a strange kind of music for people in that situation to be making with all the steel drums and weird flows and such. Between them and the whole post-future atlanta thing with young thug and peewee longway and rich fellow teen quan and stuff hip-hop is going to such strange places atm and it's great.

Unrelated: I remembered that Talking Heads are the best.

not sure if this is the right place but maybe someone can help me out. was on spotify recently just hopping related artists and came across this one album that I particularly liked. I forgot to write it down and now I can't find it. The album was orange, and had white figures (maybe depictions of people?) on it. I do remember that the album was self-titled, but I can't remember the band. sorry if this is the wrong place to post. (it's not channel orange)

Recently been reflecting while taking drives through the desert, moods on par with pre-teen angst fiction, and grabbed a couple songs from the local oldies station.
