ridiculous amount of hooks in this i love it

Recital is proud to publish the first album of American Gamelan composer Daniel Schmidt (b. 1942). Schmidt, who emerged in Xanadu music scene in the 1970s, wove the threads of traditional Eastern Gamelan music together with American Minimalism (repetitive music). Schmidt was (and is still) a prime figure in the development of American Gamelan music – studying and collaborating with Lou Harrison, Jody Diamond, and Paul Dresher. He currently is a teacher at Mills College, teaching instrument building.

The recordings on Flowers date from 1978 – 1982, selected directly from Schmidt’s personal cassette archive. It holds two studio tracks, along with two live performances. The first track, Dawn (commissioned by composer John Adams), employs an early digital sampler provided by Pauline Oliveros. It holds the sound of a string quartet. The nature of this piece is breathtaking, an ocean of strings pulsing beneath the gliding bells of the gamelan – such a lovely interplay. Furthermore, the title track, Flowers, features the addition of a rebab, a traditional bowed instrument, which reels through the piece, netted and taught.

The final two works are strictly gamelan compositions. Ghosts is a a dynamic piece; rife with dexterous euphoria- it well displays the skillset of the percussionists heard on the LP. The closing work, Faint Impressions, is a somber elegy. Demonstrating the fragility and grace possible with the gamelan; sounding almost as an evening piano sonata.

This is album is unique document from an under-represented movement of American New Music. An account of the curious beauty and woven emotions hidden within resonating pieces of metal.

recital records is run by sean mccann who is great.

Dreamy instrumentals from Fouta Toro. Improvisational session of acoustic guitar and hoddu, drawing on regional folklore, ancient praise songs and epic ballads. Recorded in a fishing village in Northern Senegal, with an ever present backdrop of children's voices culminating in a clapping and stomping rhythm section.
(no clapping and stopping in this track tho)

cut and paste OPN blip blop risks getting a bit oversaturated but when it's done well it still sounds great (like this imo)

reissue of leimer’s 4th LP (1982). weirdly.... originally used as the soundtrack to a film about bob marley’s funeral

Awa Poulo is a singer of Peulh origin from Dilly commune, Mali, near the border with Mauritania. Largely pastoral and often nomadic, Peulh- (or Fula-)speaking peoples are found from Senegal to Ethiopia but predominate in the Sahel region of West Africa. Awesome Tapes From Africa is proud to release Poulo’s newest recording of highly virtuosic folk-pop, fresh from the studio, broadcasting her vision of Peulh music beyond the grazing grounds and central markets of her remote home region in southwestern Mali.

It’s not very common to find a female singer performing publicly among the Peulh. But Poulo’s mother’s co-wife is Inna Baba Coulibaly, who is a celebrated singer most Malian music fans know. Coulibaly herself was brought into music by forces outside her control when a regional music contest required an entry from her village and she was chosen to be a singer. So, set in motion by a surprising series of events, young Poulo’s entree into the music world was auspicious as she gained popularity across the region. After several locally released tapes and CDs, this record is Poulo’s first internationally-distributed record.

On Poulo Warali, she and her band combine the hallmarks of Peulh music—warm flute floating over cross-rhythmic n’goni (lute) riffs and resonant calabash gourd hand percussion—with broader Malian sounds like lightly-distorted guitar and a heavier, rollicking inertia. Shape-shifting layers of rhythm and woody overtones match Poulo’s commanding voice in a jocular yet deliberate dance.

This is a relatively rare example of Malian Peulh music played in a modern, cosmopolitan context, reflecting the mixed society of Dilly, where Bambara, Soninke and Peulh-speaking people live among each other.

Poulo’s conscious lyrics about community concerns speak to the distinctive identity of her broadly-flung people. While Peulh represents less than 10% of Mali’s melting pot of languages, the dynamic music here powerfully resonates well beyond the linguistic borders.

very pretty stuff...

sounds very 'heavy' *adjusts bass*

feel like i keep periodically finding haruomi hosono i hadn't heard before. can't believe this is from 1993 (could be from this year). sounds amazing. v good upload quality too so listen loud. last 5 mins are bliss.

i don't know much about joe falcon and cléoma breaux. they played accordion and guitar across louisiana and texas in the 1920s. reminds me robbie basho.

relaxing

really growing on me. a few years ago she released a bunch of tapes that were essentially improv organ playing in a london church. i liked it. but this feels way more assured / organised. (see last half)

while i enjoyed number 1 angel from charli it didn't really meet my expectations so until the album appears i'm back to vroom vroom. this remix came after the initial release but is prob better than the original, whoosh (also, p glass music in 12 parts comes after this in my playlist and the transition is seamless lol) i really need a hq version of this :\

not exactly a new song for Japanese Breakfast (originally recorded by Michelle Zauner's old band Little Big League: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDQYP_7EMxg) but I like how much more room this version has to breathe. more psychopompy for sure.
