Lately:

This soundtrack is so impactful, esp heard in conjunction with the show. A pretty sublime experience

The sounds here are something else. I got really excited hearing this for the first time, thought it was really fresh.

Okay Kaya just kills it every time. Can't wait for an album.

Can we keep the 'songs that nobody will listen to thread' for just posting music without any discussion and keep this thread for its intended purpose please?

While we have a WAYLT thread, I don't really think it's that conducive to discussion and every time I open a thread my laptop shudders in horror trying to load all those music links and we post songs but never really talk about why we care about them. So what about just a general thread to chat about music and our feelings about it?

I support your sentiment. but i'd like to include that I posted the oneohtrix video because the video is very great and i think people should watch the video, rather than it merely being a song that i had been kind've listening to lately. If you want to follow my feed of songs that I've been kind've listening to lately, please report to the WAYLT thread.

you should all watch the video

hey friends,

quick fake canada update.

i know we're all sad that frank ocean didn't drop an album this summer but daniel caesar just dropped a full-length (it's on spotify, even!) and it's absolutely fantastic. this man is often compared to frank ocean in terms of style and ability - if you like rnb with interesting, "mellow" production and fantastic lyrics check this man out. pitchfork actually just started putting him on, which is fantastic - can't wait to read their review of Pilgrim's Paradise.

Check out the track he did with badbadnotgood (fantastic fake canada "modern"/hiphop jazz trio) in the spoiler, as well as another great one:

Spoiler:

on the rap side of things, i'd like to make sure you guys know about jazz cartier (jacuzzi). mans poppin off now, his next release is gonna be huge not even joking. the youth are BIG onto him, get ahead of the curve and take a tip...if you wanna find out how people-who-aren't-drake live in fake canada, this is what you gotta listen to: "I’m from fake canada but they call it the 6". dropped an album marauding in paradise earlier this year which got him a ton of attention outside of the city and he's already started dropping projects from his new project. check some choice cuts out below the spoiler (biased towards bangers and not the more introspective stuff he does)
Spoiler:

also a familiar face dropped a cool house EP a while back that you should probably listen to if you haven't already ;)

This beat is so great, it reminds me of Madlib. The lyrics are socially conscious too and I really like that. Also, the way Denmark deals with real-life problems in a way that's humorous but not flippant reminds me of Tribe, which impresses me.
Some of my favorite lines include
That's a class in the middle like Malcolm. Not X, not Little, not Jamal-Warner
and
You got cats smoking bath salt and potpourri, just baskin... and 28 days later you'll be buck-ass naked tryna eat somebody face up. That's pulled, straight from the headlines...

In other news, I got a copy of Mm.. Food for my birthday recently but can't play it because I noticed that my needle is worn out. Replacements are so expensive, it makes me wonder why I got into this gosh darn hobby in the first place :???:
Of course I'll remember that reason again once I hear that sweet vinyl sound again after my replacement, but for now...

New Animal Collective release incoming?

Apparently the new Animal Collective record is playing in the bathroom facilities at BWI Airport right now (you read that right). More info to come, but several sources are speculating a November 30th official release.

i was listening to random classical songs on youtube yesterday and came across Giuseppe Tartini's "Devil's Trill Sonata." i don't know a lot about classical music since i listen to it pretty rarely, but this stood out a lot. the story that goes along with it is great as well

One night, in the year 1713 I dreamed I had made a pact with the devil for my soul. Everything went as I wished: my new servant anticipated my every desire. Among other things, I gave him my violin to see if he could play. How great was my astonishment on hearing a sonata so wonderful and so beautiful, played with such great art and intelligence, as I had never even conceived in my boldest flights of fantasy. I felt enraptured, transported, enchanted: my breath failed me, and - I awoke. I immediately grasped my violin in order to retain, in part at least, the impression of my dream. In vain! The music which I at this time composed is indeed the best that I ever wrote, and I still call it the "Devil's Trill", but the difference between it and that which so moved me is so great that I would have destroyed my instrument and have said farewell to music forever if it had been possible for me to live without the enjoyment it affords me.

...when the record did indeed arrive, I was wary of listening because, holy shit, what if I actually like this Childish Gambino record?

The fact that I had this internal discussion—whether or not it was okay for me to like this music—is inherently funny, but what’s more is that it’s indicative of exactly what the Because the Internet is about, how self-aware Glover is, what he is trying to accomplish with Gambino, and what the culture thinks of him.

interesting read. im a little ashamed of how much pitchfork has dictated my musical tastes but that discussion isn't very interesting and has been done a million times before. but it's been a while since this record came out and i thought it would be interesting to hear what other people thought about it.

i wasn't super into the internet music discussion scene so i bought this and rick ross' mastermind at target after they came out. i was only aware of donald glover through his work in community at the time and i thought that this album made a lot of sense. it was the album i would expect donald glover to release if he was good at rapping. it tries a bit too hard with the whole associated screenplay bit - the album is a lot weaker without that which is a downside imo. theres a lot of goofiness on there which is really great because other people would accuse him of trying to sound hard if he didn't. it's about as good a rap album as you could expect a millionaire actor to put out basically

@heckawheel

This is fantastic!

This music has been an obsession for me lately, plus it helps that there are loads of this genre from the past 2 years(the one above is from 2001 but was repressed a couple months ago, and it's really dub techno but it's really fucking good so whatever)
I've included some workshop songs below, but you might also want to look into DVS1's Mistress label which I've recently rediscovered to be similar to this stuff.
Hunee's Hunch Music is different, but I feel like if you could appreciate this music you might like his stuff.

Spoiler:
Oh and there's this(Hunee in the middle)

Spoiler:
Here's one of the Kassem Mosse songs:

And one of the Lowtec

And a god awful mix with good music

I don't really read the music media much these days but I still bought into the Carrie and Lowell hype and I still think it's a really great album to sit around being depressed about.

I don't think there's anything sadder than family.

Would you all say it's inherently wrong/immoral/whatever to listen to music when the artist is known to have neo nazi/otherwise horrible views even if the lyrics don't reflect that, especially so if they do?

You know, stuff like burzum

i think it's wrong to support that artist (go to shows, buy merch, buy album, stream their album on spotify?, tell your friends how cool they are) if you think their views aren't those of someone you support. dont think you have to feel guilty about liking or listening to the music, esp if you already own it.

i dont think it's any different than if you found out, say, a super sexist person owned a coffee shop - i wouldn't go there or recommend it to others but if i already owned a bunch of coffee beans i bought there i would still use them

Fair, so as a followup question, would/do you support hip hop artists even if you knew the lyrics were full of blatant sexism and advocating of violence, especially toward women?

Like...a really large amount of mainstream hip hop artists?

i think someone on this forum once made the point that if you want to avoid all the sexist shit going on youre going to have to walk around with blinders on

im not sure where we set the bar or if we should avoid these kinds of media altogether (we probably should tbh but is it possible?). a part of me really likes watching disney movies and listening to a tribe called quest even though it is PATRIARCHY

I mean sure but I think there's a pretty big difference between subtle patriarchal undertones (or even obvious ones) like you'd find in Disney movies and straight up rapping about beating women like you'd hear in a biggie song, and I'd imagine most people would agree that if there is a line it probably exists somewhere between the two

I'm slowly coming to the realization that rock music is dying. I've been pretending for years that alternative/experimental bands like TV On the Radio and Sleigh Bells are keeping the rock spirit alive, but I don't know anymore. Everyone seems to be slipping into one of two camps: really boring "rock" music, or more experimental, oftentimes electronic sounds, thus falling into altogether new genres. In my opinion, nothing will ever be as real and raw as bands like Violent Femmes, Pixies, Gang of Four. Bands who evoked this really rich energy with simple instruments (albeit not simple instrumentation). Does anyone know of any bands that are still keeping that energy going?

@INNIT: Then what bands would you recommend?

EDIT: It seems like everyone's disagreeing with me on this, which is fine. I'm just not sure why. What bands are you guys listening to? I'm not saying that other music is bad, I really dig FKA Twigs, Azaela Banks, The Knife, etc. But none of them are rock, they're entirely different genres.
