sparkyoriental wrote:Does anybody have any book/resource recommendations suitable for a beginner interested in human computer interaction design/designing things in general? Not necessarily designing beautiful things, but functional interaction design (if that makes sense).

on my list right now:
The Design of Everyday Things
About Face 3: The Essentials of Interaction Design
The Inmates are Running the Asylum

  • microinteractions by dan saffer is highly specific to interaction design in the digital age
  • universal principles of design is a succinct intro to some psychological aspects of design
  • designing for people is superficially an industrial design book, but dreyfuss discusses how to design environments and systems that people live and interact around very well
  • don't make me think is basically required reading for HCI/UX/IxD
  • designing interfaces by tidwell is a very good and thorough and specific look at different design patterns

the design of everyday things and about face 3 are both really great. also, i just started sketching user experiences so i'll update you on how that goes.

I just learned that Patagonia is a region in Argentina. Patagonia is such an Italian word which makes scene because lots of Argentinians are of Italian descent. It also reflects in their slang, mannerisms, and food most of all. Most of south and Central America focus on like beans and rice while Argentina is all about pasta. Language is such an interesting topic. It's crazy how each area of South America has different ways of speaking Spanish.

well the name Patagonia comes from a portuguese word and to be honest I do think it sounds a lot more spanish than italian, it's where bruce chatwin went to write his first travel book which is p cool tho

Writing a paper on postmodern anxiety due to material and informational overload while simultaneously sleep deprived and and overstimulated due to coffee, ecigs, and...other stimulants can get way too meta.

Where can I buy a whole coconut? I want it for an "anything but cups" party next weekend. Unless y'all have better suggestions.

Sometimes I get so bored of how I look and yet there's nothing I can do. Edit: No chopping hair off or dyeing it green/blue soft pale grunge colours, I know that would fix the boredom but I can't do it now.

In a similar vein, losing weight is a slow, boring and frustrating process.

I try to write things to stop my job turning my brain into Excel gloop

She's the kind of girl whose parents had a great record collection.
She didn't discover punk, she inherited it.
Stiff Little Fingers on the radio in the garden.
All the patches on her jacket a bit too square.
She's reading Henry Rollins on the train,
getting off at Camden Town.

5 years ago you would have too.
Cool in London rolls out in waves from the Thames.
As the crest passes by it leaves hen parties and
tourists in big jackets strewn like cans on a beach.
People tell you the fun of this city is finding
the next cool spot, but its a drag.
You turn up in Peckham Rye and the compass has swung North
like someone's driving a magnet round the ring road.

Then, they ask you if you want to go silent speed dating
and you realise why everyone else hates this city.

So you move to the countryside,
you wear a hat and boots and you make friends with the publican.
Its great for about 6 months
but then the nights get shorter,
and you have to drive everywhere,
and you realise you didn't actually like your girlfriend enough to move in with her.
Especially not out here
where the wind makes noises like a whale
and nobody notices your Jordans.

You should probably move again.
Maybe back to London but maybe somewhere else;
Manchester's more your scene.

But then perhaps context isn't the issue.
Its the girl on the train, getting off at Camden Town.
Grab it, change it, its yours.
Everybody falls in love on the train.

Lying around in the grass on campus with friends is a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon when it's finally warm out. Little things that make great days (smiling)

@freddy It basically did look like that! However, they'd have had to crop out the guy lying face-down in the grass blackout drunk at 6 in the evening right near us. He's probably more representative of our school though. Sitting there we were wondering just how many stopped to take snapchats of that guy. We were worried he was dead before he got up and walked shakily away.
