if you don't honk at people who do stupid stuff they get away with it, mentally. if i fuck up and someone leans on the horn at me i'm not mad at them I'm mad at myself for being a dumbass

Living in Chicago this summer has taught me that way too many people lean on their horns for the stupidest stuff. So impatient even though traffic is moving at like 10 mph.

odradek I don't get whats shitty about the idea that ppl who do risky/dangerous things and receive no negative repercussions for them will continue to do them, potentially until they have an accident. honking reinforces the fact that it was a bad thing to do. very rarely do i ever get honked at in vancouver when i'm not in the wrong.

honking is not a "negative repercussion," it's an alert. using it as a tool of vengeance is silly.

probably, but
honking reinforces the fact that it was a bad thing to do.

no, it doesn't. it's just noise and wow i can't believe that dickhead honked at me, what an asshole.

cool?

honking your horn is not a tool of justice. using it to make sure people don't "get away with it" doesn't keep them from getting away with it, it just means you honked your horn. if they're trying to get away with something, they don't give a shit. if they're not paying attention, they're not "getting away with" anything anyway, they're just inattentive, and honking the horn isn't going to all of a sudden improve their driving habits - the brief, sheepish period of shame they feel will disappear in a matter of minutes.

I'm not saying that its vengeance, I'm saying that its the only thing you can do to inform someone who drives away safely from a poor decision/lapse of judgement that they shouldn't do what it is that they did.

no, it doesn't. it's just noise and wow i can't believe that dickhead honked at me, what an asshole.

man that's just such a backwards attitude to have, to react so defensively.

using it to make sure people don't "get away with it" doesn't keep them from getting away with it, it just means you honked your horn.

its feedback. if you don't take anything from it that's your own fault but people know when they've fucked up. its not like its a surprise. being inattentive isn't any different from intentionally making a bad decision in terms of the potential for harm

As the next great care-tags debates heats up, I'm planting myself firmly in the "horn as an alert" camp. Don't want to be seen as a fence-sitter down the line.

I have my motorcycle learner's permit and have had to use my horn maybe 3 or 4 times just to let people know "I'm here and you're about to hit me" but never as "I had to break a little harder than I would have preferred because you misjudged my speed and now I'm shaming you."

one time someone honked at me for not taking a life-threatening left turn while yielding and i gave them the finger and they tail-gated me for 20 minutes after that

also i can't figure out why my gif avatar doesn't loop like bela's/odradek's and it's very upsetting, if anyone has a remedy do tell

@odradek looking it up further (it's a hard thing to google) I don't think rip current is correct, I think backwash or offshore flow might be more what I'm going for. Rip current seems a bit specialised.

Compare:

damn dude, i just read a review on the nail salon i always go to and love, and now i'm having a moral dilemma. this vietnamese guy went to get his nails done and the entire time he could understand all the nail techs talking shit about him and calling him a faggot, and also talking about how dirty black people are and how it's insulting to have to work for them. now i'm conflicted because i don't want to support a business where employees talk and act like this, but i also know this kind of behavior runs rampant in most nail salons and you'd be hard-pressed to find one where you could actually verify that the techs aren't talking shit about the clientele in another language. also, this is vain, but it took me a while to find a salon that has good prices and does my nails exactly how i like them. mannnnn.
