Consumerism isn't really something you can escape... what you're describing is basically just conspicuous consumption. Which is also a very natural behavior under capitalism.

By Consumerism - The Hobby, are you referring to personal style? You might try designing your own items, or altering them, on as small a scale as needed. Cross-stitching patches, for example.

I thought about obvious artistic outlets like painting, but you'd have to buy stuff for that, too.

I then thought of a couple ways you could be artistic using stuff you'd have bought anyway:

  • elegantly-plated delicious food
  • artfully stacked unused toilet-paper rolls

The latter sounds like frat decor to me, but if you make an arch behind an Eames chair you've already bought…

you can also make music with fl studio/ableton/tablet app. It can take up a lot of time if you're into it.

After a while, buying music equipment for me is the best way to abstain from buying too many clothes.

I'm still buying shit but there is a more concrete purpose involved there(still consumerist tho). The high cost of the equipment also makes me think harder about buying something, therefore making purchases much less frequent and frivolous.

i don't think this is deserving of its own market post, but, I bought a pair of the bred 1s that just dropped in a size 10 and as much as my high school self wanted these for so long, I guess I don't really give a shit about them anymore. they are fine but I really think they look like clown shoes on me. if anyone wanted to trade anything for them i'd be interested. if not i'll probably just sell them on ebay but I figured maybe someone here would want them for not paying resell? might be open to cash? idk pm me if you are at all interested. wore them 3 times

I haven't spoken a lot of English since I finished school last year and I'm totally out of practise. I still enjoy reading English articles and books but I haven't actually spoken the language in a long time (actually the last time I spoke English was when I went to London for a week earlier this year). It sucks because I really enjoy the language, probably even more than my native tongue. It's the main reason why I haven't been as active on here outside of posting fit pics. Feels bad when you try to express your thoughts on something but the right words just won't come to mind :(

BUT!! I'm going to be backpacking across the east coast of Australia for a few months starting at the end of this year, so I'll be getting a lot of practise really soon. Very excited about that

reading magazine articles led me to find this phrase,もったいない (mottainai). it's a phrase relating to a wonderful philosophy encompassing full utilization of goods, eg waste not, want not. it also probably explains the huge secondhand garment market in japan we're all probably familiar with. it's a very anti-consumerist perspective.
We often hear in Japan the expression 'mottainai,' which loosely means 'wasteful' but in its full sense conveys a feeling of awe and appreciation for the gifts of nature or the sincere conduct of other people. There is a trait among Japanese people to try to use something for its entire effective life or continue to use it by repairing it. In this caring culture, people will endeavor to find new homes for possessions they no longer need. The 'mottainai' principle extends to the dinner table, where many consider it rude to leave even a single grain of rice in the bowl.

i find this really funny because i don't think there's a country that uses more plastic bottles and plastic packaging than japan...
