just took the LSAT and was killing it until 3 hours in, very last section, very last part of that section, run into a six-problem set that i had no idea how to do and had a panic attack and had to guess for all 6 questions and ruined my chances of getting a good score

"The best time to plant a tree was 30 years ago; the second best time is right now."

I suspect journaling and raw denim are similar.

I eat rice pretty often along with normal meals but sometimes I just get a craving for just a plain bowl of good rice. You know?

When you make a throwaway comment to the lady at the post office about how fast time is going and she tells you that today is her 50th birthday and just glares at you with an "I don't want to be here, I should have done something else with my life" look

Do you want to know a lot of font names and styles or learn the fundamentals behind typesetting? If the latter I can recommend these:
Image

Now, truth be told I've only read the first few pages of 'Thinking With Type' by Ellen Lupton. And I believe that's the best one to start with. As for the other two I don't know if they're a solid recommendation. But Thinking With Type was recommended to me by a typographer during a lecture so I'm fairly certain that's a good book. You should probably research it a little to make sure it's what you want to learn about.

i read it twice before posting that rep comment

humor is inherently derived from transgression, plain and simple. humor also affects people at a level that's deeper than where we determine high-minded notions of right and wrong. i don't overthink why i like louis ck - his standup just makes me laugh, even if he does say some rude shit (there's also plenty of people who make jokes about offensive things that aren't funny, and when offensive jokes aren't funny the only intent is to offend). people who think comedy should always be well-intentioned have extremely limited options, and comedians who only want to enact positive social change get unfunny really fast and just end up becoming activists.

i can at least respect CAH for pulling their "date rape" card from the deck, they're at least self-aware about not punching down too egregiously

but in the final analysis you're getting mad at a card game for perpetuating problematic shit? like a card game is what's keeping racism alive? getting mad at a party game for perpetuating unhealthy shit is like getting mad at 21 savage for perpetuating gang violence, they didn't start the fire dude

"pick your battles" AKA "why worry about this when there are worse things in the world" AKA remaining complicit with shitty, casual racism/misogyny/etc enabling trash AKA willful ignorance

it is NOT a hard ask to play other games, i'm sure there are more than a few that don't encourage shitty behavior.

also, just because something didn't start racism doesn't mean it's not actively perpetuating it and isn't still bad. and YES, this card game is helping keep racism alive, 100 percent. the game makes it okay (encouraged!) to be casually racist

How is it incomprehensible that a card game could be perpetuating "problematic shit"? How is it unthinkable that a card game could be part of what's "keeping racism alive"? Is your contention that racist cultural productions are to be enjoyed without qualms, simply because they "didn't start" racism, sexism, etc? Because that's dumb as hell. A better fire fighting strategy might be to attempt to extinguish all the flames, since they're all destroying something, rather than trying to find the single flame that started it all in a burning house.

If 21 Savage was a party game that gave you and your friends a safe space and encouragement to practice gang violence, then of course it would be problematic and would merit "getting mad at".

There's plenty of comedy that's is not intended to be offensive and also doesn't create a byproduct of offensiveness. It's basically the difference between Apples to Apples and Cards Against Humanity. CAH was a game manufactured to produce offensive comedy. It's almost innate in the sense that it's impossible to play any card without being offensive. Apples to Apples in turn, gives you the capability to be offensive but it's up to the player's choice and doesn't require you to be complicit.

"Puritanism: The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy." — H.L. Mencken

If it makes me a puritan to call out things that allow people to be gleefully open with their racism and sexism, sign me up. Love too see people quote straight white men that also said things like:

On the subject of Jews, Mencken wrote in December, 1943, that the Maryland Club had decided against admitting any more Jewish members after the only one on its rolls died. "There is no other Jew in Baltimore who seems suitable," he said.

Of blacks, he wrote in September, 1943, that " . . . it is impossible to talk anything resembling discretion or judgment to a colored woman. They are all essentially child-like, and even hard experience does not teach them anything."

Every time I see someone online getting mad at the problematic aspects of, say, a card game like CAH or Family Guy or whatever, I can't help but see it as armchair activism. To me devoting any real time to addressing it – like writing an NYTimes thinkpiece, or outlining its sins on an internet fashion forum – is sort of conceding that "as a middle-class person living in a socially-progressive part of a first world country, the only place I see or experience overt racism is in party card games or nationally-syndicated TV shows".

You can say that I'm blinding myself to the issues that these kinds of things create, but I can't bring myself to pick apart and denounce a card game when there's so many other issues that could be prioritized. Giving CAH any attention or devoting any energy to denouncing it just kind of feels trivial in comparison to focusing on constant police killings of unarmed black people, or the Flint water crisis, or Republican support for the reinstation of Stop and Frisk, or Hurricane Matthew only garnering attention when it approaches Florida and not when it kills 500+ Haitians and displaces countless more, etc. etc. etc.

So "pick your battles" to me isn't turning a blind eye to problematic things or dismissing them as "not problematic enough", it's prioritizing some social issues as having more significance or importance than others, and CAH doesn't rank that high. I'd love it if CAH was the most racist shit out there, but as it is there's a lot worse that deserves more time and energy.

My $0.02 though, so if there's a contrasting point to be made let me know
