calligraphy today~ i'm using flat nibs (speedball c2 title, c4 author, c3 text). the poem is "love after love" by derek walcott. i made a few typos but salvaged them by turning them into other words.

Calligraphy is actually really cool, how/where did you learn it?

I always had the idea of becoming good at it for writing really good greetings cards and legible lecture notes.

classes at the design school of my university. we have an amazing professor who teaches 4 levels of calligraphy in a schoolhouse-style setting: everyone in one room, wednesday night, 6:30–9:30. the very first class i had with her we had to turn down the air-conditioning to hear her, she was so quiet!

i've taken calligraphy I (where we learn the foundational hand—this is really good as it gives diagrams of how to construct each letter, and you practice being able to copy it exactly), and calligraphy II is what i'm in now, and we learn to write italics (as shown in my picture). italics are quite fun bc you can really customize the forms and the angle of the slant and a few other things according to your personal taste, so people's italics end up very individualized.

This is a cool thread. I write my neatest when using engineering paper. Here's some stuff I had to scan for a report.

If it's spacing you have trouble with primary school techniques can help, writing out a short paragraph length repeatedly only focusing on making sure the space is consistent. Same with writing individual letters repeatedly and joining to make sure you're really understanding where the weakness lays.

If your personal font is sloppy one way to improve legibility quickly with no real effort is to stop writing cursive, same sloppy font but no wobbly lines makes it easier to recog.

A lot of people kind of take writing for granted and let their hand drop loose/ end up scribbling the end of words, when your form should remain consistent throughout. think of it like when you try to drink more water. At first you make a conscious effort going out of your way to do so And before you know it you're doing it naturally. All about building muscle memory.

@oucho, some thoughts/suggestions:

  • get graph paper or something where you can draw on straight lines and fix your proportions
  • write larger, because mistakes and inconsistencies become more obvious, and it forces you to write slower
  • write very slowly anyway, because you need to carefully write until your new writing style becomes a habit, and then automatic
  • get consistency between letters (make all your e's and o's and a's the same height, for example)
  • choose a letter that you think looks ugly and practice a few different ways of drawing it. for a week, resolve to improve specifically that letter (i spent a week fixing my y's to be more beautiful)

I've decided my bad hand writing is endearing.
