Hey guys I wrote a sonnet I didn't hate a few years ago. Poetry is really tough for me to write.

"Avalanche"

When I hear "avalanche" I always think
of bits and pieces that might cause its start−
A smattering of rocks from some high brink
or ledge that split from boulders and depart.
What happens right before the change is made
A leaning, or a push, from something more,
a force unseen that triggers a cascade
and lends its hand to crushing savage roar
that strips a slope of trees and dirt and meat
left scattered, shaken by a wicked game
the unseen force makes haste on callous feet
an Oppenheimer marked by none with blame
And in the awful wake that bleeds and flows
what guilt is felt by that which never knows?

Anyone have tips/articles to read on editing your work? Getting a submission for an MFA together and it's overwhelming to try and come up with 100 pages of edited work...

@teck maybe? I know you write.

ARGH.

New people: Read previous posts to find out what's up. I'd love to have some of you join up.

OK who did @odradek nominate? Wasn't it @schiaparelli? Is she still posting? I'm not sure. If not, I nominate @charybdis to follow up.

Okay, I'm on it. (Is season 2 going to be dialogue only?)

PSA: If you joined more recently, just leave a comment and I think bela can add you to the list.

Season two is not dialogue only but it'd be fun if it was, wouldn't it?

Life is chaos. There are no rules. WICTW respects this sentiment.

I am one of the new folks dragged here by dwindles. I'm not much of a ~creative~ writer, but I'm in a creative-writing-adjacent field (I'm a PhD student in literature), so I'm here to watch. I might try my hand at WICTW at some point though.

Most things that I write are not fit for general consumption (unless you love literary criticism), but I'm one of the new co-owners of d.so and co-editor of the new d.so blog, so I'll be writing stuff for that. My first post just went up, so that is a thing that I wrote that you can read. I haven't written for a general audience since high school, so I'm open to feedback.

Is it too late to get on the WICTW list?

Has anyone here ever self-published a chapbook? I did it for the first time in April, and though it was insane and stressful (my parents and a lot of my friends had never heard my stuff) it was also crazy rewarding. If anyone has been thinking about doing a chapbook, I really recommend it. Here's one of the poems. The formatting is probably really fucked up but eh

Spoiler:
HOSOTAN

i was with friends in a field beyond my house at the end of an avenue i didn’t know but that bisected everything and came out of the shell of the city to the field the field by the airport so planes would come in almost close
in the clouds they would have two eyes of light
Hosotan would point up and say
check that car
we’d laugh and go back
beyond the trees was the shell of the city

Hosotan opened his door in his boxers. he shaved his hair into a mohawk. he lived past me. he jammed headphones over his ears and flew down the street. parts of him opened beneath his bicycle beneath his own kingdoms. his feet were invincible. he was contractually obligated to never die. that night in the field by the airport i stepped into a nest of spiders a mother its children perfect spheres white and filled with air unfurling arms coming out from within pulling of skulls amphibian over all over me

i’d like to think of us from rooftop to rooftop a hasidic family sleeping beneath
or the art students
or the culture heroes of Louis Family Restaurant four years sober
infinite grace coming out of them
knowledge of what should always be done forever

my feet swelled and became shiny with life and blistered because the mother had made me pregnant and left things inside of me so that some nights i wouldn’t sleep thinking what they were walk to the kitchen and take a knife from the drawer short and serrated and press one of its teeth against myself clear and fluid the orange light the crust of bread before me the people down the street in the steps of their tenement. i knew it wouldn’t hurt. it would just be alarm. i always put the knife down and went to sleep.

Hosotan came to visit me to stare
when his teeth fell out they grew back ceramic
diamond nothing to worry about
his face painted white the bending
of spine and back
shifting fabric
his namesake
girl
summer storm
story of smallpox
in the end nothing came from my feet
they would be born elsewhere
the field their mothers crossed the mouth
of my friend at the end of my bed
the bread on the countertop the people
down the street
in the corner of their tenement
that kind of birth needed a dozen
hundred thousand times
before it could happen right

Hosotan had a girl who lived far away
one night in new mexico they lost each other
in a forest he claimed was black and burnt and somehow dripping
i’ve tried to think of a future for him
which is something i would do
i had a dream of him once––

i was half asleep
i was going to work
i was waiting table i was showering i was masturbating
maybe just out of boredom
i got dressed i went walking it all somewhere in there
and the dream it was Providence
you were outside a house maybe off hope street
it was late winter it was gray out there was snow
and you were in front of this house
in a loose wool coat and a pair of slippers
smoking a cigarette and man
you looked so tired
that was all I could think about
you looked so tired
you had some ragged hole deep in your stomach and you pulled
but you had done it whatever it was

What if I gently chided @stingray sam and @charybdis? Acknowledging that this is merely an amusing diversion, but also pointing out that it never looks good to welsh on a deal, even if the deal is pretty minor
