Andrew Solomon, The Reckoning: The father of the Sandy Hook killer searches for answers.

anything by Andrew Solomon is going to be excellent though, so highly recommend him as a writer in general

I highly recommend this read about how a small group of traders and techies figured out the inefficiencies of high speed trading and how they were being exploited by big banks to take advantage of investors. Even more incredible is how this group revolutionized trading by creating their own stock exchange that protected investors using delayed trades.

For anyone wondering what the current prospects of nuclear fusion solving the world's energy problems are, this article does a great job of explaining the history, politics, and challenges surrounding fusion research at the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). It is also a sobering look at the limits of current energy sources.

I'm decently good friends with "Puz". Although I had no idea that was his nickname and have never called him that. Neither do any of our other mutual friends, as far as I know.

A friend of mine sent this to me. It's kind of a dumbed down look at the Japanese obsession with Americana through a few avenues (bourbon, jazz, burgers, clothes) meant for I guess a more general audience. What I think is interesting is that usually this idea is presented at least in part as a part of youth culture (like most things in fashion), when in fact it's something that affects older people as well (though everyone in the story is a man, which is equally interesting).

Found a website with a lot of David Foster Wallace's essays. Well worth going through. My favourites are "David Lynch Keeps His Head" and "Consider the Lobster".

There's some Zadie Smith stuff too, she's really great. My favourite is "Fail Better".

http://nymag.com/news/features/foreigners-hiding-money-new-york-real-estate-2014-6/

crazy housing prices in new york are partly being used as a way for ultra-rich people in other countries to stash/launder money overseas.

something that jumped out at me:

The Census Bureau estimates that 30 percent of all apartments in the quadrant from 49th to 70th Streets between Fifth and Park are vacant at least ten months a year.

The same thing is happening in London- "The empty buildings include a row of 10 mansions worth £73m which have stood largely unused since they were bought between 1989 and 1993, it is believed on behalf of members of the Saudi royal family."

Worth reading because it's pretty stupid. I know plenty of black people who engage in stereotypically 'white' activities, why is it not fair the other way around? And why single out gays? Doesn't help that this is written in a super-preachy manner.

This response is much more agreeable

Cool article on the owner of Media Takeout. I kind of like that the site hovers right in that space of "is this meant to be a joke?????", but I do agree with some of the criticisms brought up by the profile.

Two great articles about identity.

The Chameleon You've probably heard of this guy, a French man who would pretend to be a teenager and then integrate himself into a school or a community.

Mercenary This one is about a man in charge of security at a nuclear power plant, who claims to have been a mercenary and global assassin.
