I start a job with a business casual dress code soon. It's a conservative company and the employees aren't very "fashion." I obviously can't stick to my regular style...I guess I just want to fit in? I went shopping today for work clothing and realized that even J.Crew/Banana Republic would be out of sync with the rest of the company. In an ideal world I'd be wearing sheath dresses, blazers, and heels, but most women wear cardigans, khakis, and flats. Blahhhh this isn't a client facing job so appearance isn't super important, but I don't want to stand out because of what I wear.

Is there a work appropriate clothing thread?

some time lapse videos of fashion shoot retouching. of particular note is that they add pores to videos 2 and 3 instead of removing them.

Rick Owens Lilies is sometimes translated as Rick Owens Lilith which seems both more and less appropriate at the same time.

The video-game industry has a dress code – driven by a lack of diversity
I wasn’t expecting a young, vibrant creative world to have a uniform. But there is an insidious pressure to fit in, and it involves plaid and denim

Of course, I’m not saying that the whole industry needs a makeover, but it has to be more welcoming toward different concepts of style and identity. Creativity begins with how we feel and how we see and present ourselves as people. This industry isn’t just dressing identically, it draws its flintstone from the same music, movies and books. This homogeneity leads to staid ideas.

not sure I agree with 100% of what's being said (dress how you want imo) but i definitely don't disagree as much as that comments section

The purpose of the Prize is to make the LVMH Group’s know-how available to assist young fashion designers with their entrepreneurial projects. After finalists are short-listed by a committee of experts, the Prize will be awarded to the enterprise of a young designer to be selected by an international jury
composed of qualified and recognized authorities in the fashion industry.

The goals of the Prize are philanthropic and artistic. Participant applications are reviewed by fashion professionals on the basis of qualitative criteria of creativity, originality, innovation, technical sophistication, and craftsmanship. No registration fees are required to participate, nor are participants supposed to acquire or use any item whatsoever.

You're trying to blame him for the fact that other people like his work.

Getting up in arms about the fact that he has a merc shows its more personal to you than just "LVMH is making the wrong choice"

If he was pretending to be poor and destitute and making clothes in a hole with cash advances on his parents credit card to make himself appear more in need that would be disingenuous. He owns a car. He uses it to move things from place to place. He's open about the fact that he's already been quite successful.

All that winning the lvmh prize means is that lvmh thinks you have a scalable (read: profitable) label.

Faustine probably meets all the qualitative criteria but she's not particularly scalable. Wouldn't be surprised if Virgil wins. Wouldn't be surprised if one of the designers no one is talking about wins.

(It also don't matter)

Faustine will be fine or she won't be fine.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised at all if Virgil won, it might not appeal to c-t's demographic but Pyrex/Off-White are super popular. $100 screenprinted champion blanks put him on the map, in a twisted way that's a serious achievement

it might be a hard pill to swallow but there are times when artistic integrity takes a back seat to profitability, even in high fashion

besides, Virgil has branched out from basic screenprinting to some extent, his women's designs are a lot stronger than his men's stuff and *artsy-fartsy high fashion* is growing more and more popular with the rapper set, so off-white and yeezy x adidas might become more like OG Lang/archive Raf and less Diamond Supply Co.

virgil abloh is extremely talented, i have no idea what the competition is like but just because he doesn't fit into your paradigm of what contemporary or 'authentic' fashion is doesn't mean he's there by chance.

If somebody runs a business in a way which you don't think is making as positive a contribution to society as it should do, but they succeed anyway because of their business acumen/contacts/whatever, then that is something which you can be angry about. Virgil Abloh hasn't been like 'hey I'm going to make some stuff and if people like it and it's successful then great! If not I'll keep making it anyway', there is obviously a huge business side to what he is doing and it's popularity is a result of what he and his team have done. If a business chooses to make money in a way which you don't think is correct or appreciate (in this case bad design) then you are allowed to criticise them for that. I think heckawheel is going through a period of realisation and frustration about how commercial the fashion industry really is, as a design purist he is obviously angry about that.

CheerUpBrokeBoy wrote:it might be a hard pill to swallow but there are times when artistic integrity takes a back seat to profitability, even in high fashion

I don't think people realise how much this happens ALL THE TIME in high fashion, I have done fittings with big brands and partway through someone comes in and starts to tell the designer what to do to make the collection commercial. They don't make money from the good stuff in the shows. Even Dries van Noten has to make t-shirts he doesn't really want to sometimes, and he is like the least compromising of all of them. Do you really think Raf is interesting in sending out Adidas collabs every season? I doubt he even gets involved in the design process, which is mainly just picking colourways now anyway, and just signs off a junior designer's work.

Allister Mackie, who styles the men's LV and Lanvin shows told me he prefers working for Lanvin because it's less commercial, they don't have to send out crappy bags with half the runway looks, and that's the SHOW, the least commercial thing of all. I know a girl who designs women's bags for LV too, and she says her job is to make bags for people with bad taste.

At the end of the day compromise is a scale and it's up to each individual to decide where the line is crossed, personally I don't think it's wrong for Raf to keep making Adidas shoes, I like them, and I don't think it's wrong for Dries to make t-shirts. I do find Virgil Abloh's brand to be a bit pointless and commercial, he probably doesn't even design any of it anyway.

I personally can't find any sympathy for businesses that just exist to turn a profit, and don't really contribute to society. Unfortunately that's how the world seems to work and you have to accept that really, but it doesn't mean you have to be happy about and can't rebel in your own little way on care-tags!

I refuse to believe Raf doesn't personally design every Raf x Fred season.

I bet it would warm his little heart to see me trying to score polos off some tkmaxx huxster who has listed it on eBay for 30% of retail
