Cyberpsace anarcho syndicalism is pretty close to my heart, but really, its a losing fight unless we rejig the website to start sending "rep notifications" to your phone.

I would say early tumblr was a somewhat anarchic space, but that would be showing my age, which people would use to work out that I have a house.

give up watching movies for 2020.

Just sit home in the dark, not looking at your phone for an hour and a half - two hours. Has exactly the same effect and you don't have to worry about whether the "film" is "good" or "bad"

How do y'all feel about all this talk about wage adjustment based on where you live re: remote workers? It seems popular response is that it's bad. But I feel like bringing silicon valley "bucks" into rural areas like montana/idaho/wyoming is way more problematic than someone getting a 5-10k salary cut because they work remotely from some of these more rural areas.

Am I missing something? I'd be happy to take a pay cut if it meant I got to telecommute from wherever I want.

Huh, haven't really followed this topic at all but just my surface levels thoughts are that this seems pretty hard to implement. Assuming if somehow companies to figure out after-tax salary in my current state and have that exactly the same elsewhere, I would be all for it. However, due to a stupid amount of moving parts associated with taxes this seems unlikely.

I think its probably a problem because you produce the same amount of value for the company regardless of where you are, so why should you be being paid less? I don't consider "remote work" to be much of a perk, maybe you do, but it isn't universally so. It just seems like a further alienation from labour, that you can guarantee will be exploited by le bosses.

I'm not an economist and don't understand marx so maybe someone with 300iq can weigh in, but in general, welcoming being paid less for doing the same work seems bad to me.

@JewTurk why do you think it's bad to bring in Silicon Valley money into rural areas? because of gentrification + pushing out the people who currently live there?

I remembering reading this article a while back and thought I'd share. It gets into this exact thing:

Educated tech workers are able to telecommute and earn big city salaries while living in a less expensive smaller town. One of the side effects of this migration of money and people is a decoupling of local wages relative to property values and rents. Locals are increasingly out bid.

It's pretty pro-development, doesn't really address gentrification, and mostly focuses on NIMBYISM so take it with a grain of salt, but I felt like the pictures were pretty good in terms of capturing the situation.

To go back to the original comment though, I think you'd still have gentrification even if people took a paycut since you'd see demand outpacing supply. IMO there's not really an easy solution though and it all goes back to the commodification of housing.

But there are poor people in big cities too, so I don't really get it.

Other than...of course...the obvious..........RACIAL implications.....of country poor vs city poor.

Yeah pretty much - a lot of the dialogue gets reduced to tech gentrifier vs locals when the people moving in could be lower/middle income and were priced out of their own city.

if u support ur local small biz i dont see why it necessarily bad bc thats actively injecting money into ur community. i mean if u spend all ur techbro monie on online purchases from outta town n big chain conglomerate ur not rly helping ur community at all n like ur monie basically get siphoned outta the locality

id rather have ppl with their og salary come thru 2 smaller towns n drop a 20 in tip for the mom n pop diner more than some big tech company pocketing the extra 20. u wanna see some jeff brozos type beat getting even richer nah
